Howard tops Wright to win derby...Kenny against Penny...Liriano,Eckstein added
PITTSBURGH - Philadelphia Phillies first baseman RyanHoward has won the All-Star home run derby in Pittsburgh, beatingNew York Mets third baseman David Wright 5-to-4 in the final Mondaynight. Howard belted eight homers in the opening round and ten inthe semifinals, one year after teammate Bobby Abreu (uh-BRAY'-oo)won the derby. Wright led all sluggers with 16 homers in the firstround.
PITTSBURGH - Detroit Tigers lefty Kenny Rogers will be theAmerican League starter for Tuesday's All-Star game at Pittsburgh. Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny will start for theNational League. Rogers is 11-and-3 with a three-point-85 earnedrun average while Penny is 10-and-2 with a two-point-91 E-R-A.
PITTSBURGH - Minnesota Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano hasbeen added to the American League All-Star team while St. LouisCardinals shortstop David Eckstein (EHK'-styn) was placed on theNational League squad. Eckstein replaces New York Mets injuredshortstop Jose Reyes. Liriano fills in for Chicago White Sox hurlerJose Contreras, who pitched on Sunday.
UNDATED - Forward Shelden Williams has inked a four-yeardeal with the Atlanta Hawks, less than two weeks after being takenwith the fifth overall selection in the N-B-A draft. And theSeattle SuperSonics have signed first round draft pick MouhamedSene (SEH'-nay), the tenth overall selection in the draft.
UNDATED - The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired forwardMartin Havlat from Ottawa in a three-team deal that sends forwardMark Bell to San Jose. The Senators get Tom Preissing (PRY'-sihng),Josh Hennessy, Michal Barinka (MY'-kuhl buh-RIHNG'-kuh) and a 2008second-round draft pick. The Blackhawks also get Bryan Smolinski(smoh-LIHN'-skee).
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - The veterinarian for Barbaro says theKentucky Derby winner may have some tough days ahead after havingthe fourth change to his cast in a week. Barbaro is being treatedat the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in KennettSquare.

PHILADELPHIA - Fourth-round pick Max Jean-Gilles has signeda four-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles hadtraded up in the fourth round of the N-F-L draft to getJean-Gilles. He's a guard who earned All-America honors as a seniorlast season at Georgia.
