Sports-Labor Day, Sept. 4th

Ryan Howard homered in his first three at-bats Sunday against Atlanta's Tim Hudson, raising his major league-leading total to 52 and setting a record for second-year players. Each homer was greeted with a standing ovation and chants of "M-V-P!" as he rounded the bases. The Atlanta Braves scored twice in the eleventh inning to gain a split of their doubleheader in Philadelphia 3-to-1. In the opener, the Phillies rallied after wasting a five-run lead to beat the Braves 8-to-7. The Phillies host Houston today.

ST LOUIS (AP) - Albert Pujols homered in his first three at-bats to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-to-3. Pujols added two-run drives in the third and fifth,all off losing pitcher Ian Snell. The Pirates' road trip continues as they play the Chicago Cubs today.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Right-hander Jeremy Cummings tossed the first nine-inning no-hitter in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons history in a 5-to-0 victory over the Rochester Red Wings. The Barons wrap up the regular season with one more game at Rochester this afternoon.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) - Kasey Kahne earned his fifth win of the Nextel Cup season last night by finishing ahead of Dale Earnhardt Junior at the Sony H-D 500 at California Speedway. The victory leaves Kahne 30 points behind Jeff Burton in the battle for the final spot in the Chase for the championship. Matt Kenseth grabbed the overall lead from Jimmie Johnson in the points race,moving nine ahead with a seventh-place finish at Fontana.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego Chargers linebacker Steve Foley is recovering from gunshot wounds suffered in an altercation with police in front of his home yesterday morning. The shooting occurred after an officer reported seeing a suspected drunken driver weaving in and out of traffic at speeds up to 90 miles-an-hour on an area highway. Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer says the wounds are not life-threatening.

NORTON, Mass. (AP) - Vijay Singh has a three-shot lead over Tiger Woods and Justin Rose heading into the final round of the Deutsche Bank Open. Singh set a course record with the lowest round of his P-G-A career, a ten-under-par 61 that puts him eleven-under. Annika Sorenstam closed with a 62 to win the L-P-G-A's State Farm Classic, and Scott Simpson captured the Wal-Mart First Tee Open.
