DENVER (AP) — One of the most storied NFL playoff teams ran into a rejuvenated Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos. Sorry, Pittsburgh Steelers. The magic is back. Tebow connected with Demaryius Thomas on an electrifying 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime and the Broncos defeated the stunned Steelers 29-23 in the AFC wild-card game yesterday.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — It's official. Josh McDaniels will return to the New England Patriots as an offensive assistant this week, and will serve under Bill O'Brien, the offensive coordinator who was named coach at Penn State on Saturday. The team made the announcement last night. O'Brien and McDaniels will now gameplan for the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round.
OTTAWA (AP) — Filip Kuba scored the go-ahead goal with 1:11 left and the Ottawa Senators beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 yesterday to earn a split of the weekend home-and-home series. Kuba fired a slap shot from the left point past goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, and Nick Foligno sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 45 seconds to go.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Jordan Hulls hit seven of Number 12 Indiana's season-high 16 3-point field goals to help the Hoosiers snap a 16-game Big Ten road losing streak and hold on for an 88-82 victory over Penn State yesterday. Hulls scooted around the perimeter all game for open looks and finished with 28 points for Indiana.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Frantz Massenat scored a career-high 24 points to lead Drexel to a 64-58 victory over Virginia Commonwealth last night. The sophomore guard hit 7 of 10 shots, including all four of his 3-point attempts, as the Dragons won for the eighth time in nine games.
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) — Maalik Wayns scored 21 points, Dominic Cheek added 20 and Villanova defeated DePaul 87-71 yesterday, snapping a three-game losing skid for the Wildcats. Mouphtaou Yarou had 14 and JayVaughn Pinkston 13 for Villanova. The Wildcats had lost their first three conference games for the first time since joining the Big East in 1980-81.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Earl Pettis scored 19 points and Ramon Galloway had 18 as La Salle built a 26-point halftime lead and coasted to an 82-75 victory over Massachusetts 82-75 yesterday. The Explorers shot 56.7 percent as they built a 51-25 halftime lead, including 10 of 16 on 3-pointers.
