PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers desperation paid off
with a comeback victory in a series that looked to be lost. They
avoided elimination by beating the Penguins 3-0 last night to force
Game 6 in the Eastern Conference first-round series. The series
returns to Philadelphia Saturday afternoon.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dave Bush held Philadelphia hitless for 7
1-3 innings before pinch-hitter Matt Stairs homered and the
Milwaukee Brewers beat the Phillies 6-1. Bush became the sixth
pitcher to take a no-hit bid into the late innings this season. The
Phillies are on the road for a weekend series against the Florida
Marlins.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - By splitting the first two games in Orlando,
the Philadelphia 76ers grabbed the home-court edge in their
first-round playoff series against the Magic. Don't be too quick to
call it an advantage. Orlando tied Cleveland and Boston for the
second-best road record in the NBA this season at 27-14. Game 3 is
tonight.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tennessee got off to a strong start at the
Penn Relays. The Volunteers began this year's event by beating
Georgetown to win the distance medley at University of
Pennsylvania's Franklin Field yesterday. Tennessee entered this
event the clear favorite after it set a world record during the
indoor season.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles signed restricted
free agent receiver Hank Baskett to a one-year contract yesterday.
Baskett has 71 catches for 1,046 yards and six touchdowns in three
seasons in Philadelphia. The Eagles also signed rookie free agent
tight end Eugene Bright.
