PITTSBURGH (AP) - The streaking New Jersey Devils beat the
Pittsburgh Penguins, as Martin Brodeur broke the NHL record with
his 104th career shutout. Maybe the only surprise was how easily
the victory came against the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh
Penguins. Brodeur needed to make only a few difficult saves while
breaking Terry Sawchuk's shutout record.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Nathan Horton, Stephen Weiss and Michael
Frolik all scored power-play goals to lead the Florida Panthers
past the punchless Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 last night. The Flyers
have lost 14 of their last 17 games and only Carolina has fewer
points in the NHL. Expected to contend for the Stanley Cup,
Philadelphia has lost its scoring touch.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Denver Broncos play the Philadelphia
Eagles this Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, marking the return
of seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, who spent 13 seasons
with the Eagles before signing with Denver. At the same time,
Philadelphia's dynamic offense may see the return of another Eagles
icon: Running back Brian Westbrook.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers say wide receiver
Limas Sweed and long snapper Greg Warren will miss the rest of the
season. Sweed, a former second-round draft pick, is on the reserve
non-football illness list. Warren has been placed on the
reserve/injured list. He injured his right knee after tearing his
anterior cruciate ligament on the final play of Sunday's game
against Green Bay.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Talor Battle scored 16 points as Penn
State won for the third time in four games, beating American 76-57
last night. The Nittany Lions made 12 of their first 15 shots of
the second half and finished at 54.9 percent from the field. Chris
Babb scored 13 points and Bill Edwards had 12 for Penn State.
