SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Tim Lincecum (LINZ'-ih-kuhm) tossed a
two-hitter and fanned a Giants postseason-record 14 in hurling the
San Francisco Giants past Atlanta 1-0 in the opener of that
National League Division Series. Game 2 of that NLDS is tonight
with 13-game winner Matt Cain going for the Giants against Tommy
Hanson.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The New York Yankees-Minnesota Twins series
has a day off today, and do the Twins ever need it. The Twins find
themselves down 2-0 after losing their 11th straight postseason
game and eighth in a row to the Yanks, 5-2 last night, as Lance
Berkman homered and drove in two runs to help Andy Pettitte win his
19th career postseason game.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays are another team
needing a day off, and they're getting one today as well. The Texas
Rangers, who've never won a postseason series, need just one
victory in Texas after blanking the Rays 6-0 yesterday to take a
2-0 series lead.
DENVER (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks opened defense of their
Stanley Cup crown by losing 4-3 in overtime to the Colorado
Avalanche. Paul Stastny scored twice, including the game-winner
with 1:20 left in OT, for the Avs.
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - The seventh-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers
improved to 5-and-0 after ending a 99-year rivalry with Kansas
State by thrashing the outmanned Wildcats 48-13. Nebraska
quarterback Taylor Martinez rushed for 242 yards and four
touchdowns and now has run for 737 yards in his first five games, a
record for Nebraska quarterbacks.
