CINCINNATI (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers keep pace with
Baltimore atop the AFC North -- holding off the Bengals last night
in Cincinnati, 27-21. Antwaan Randle El threw a 39-yard pass for a
touchdown off a trick play. But in the end, it was the defense that
won the game, with two Steelers defenders stripping the ball from
receiver Jordan Shipley on the Bengals' final play.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers and Claude Giroux have agreed on
a multiyear contract extension, with the forward due to have become
a restricted free agent next July. Terms of the deal were not
disclosed. Giroux has played for the Flyers over parts of four
seasons and has seven goals and 14 points so far this season.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have canned Greg Gilbert, the
coach of their AHL affiliate, after the Adirondack Phantoms started
the season 2-10-1. Taking over as coach for now is assistant GM
John Paddock, who had led the Phantoms to a 43-30-2-5 record and a
spot in the Calder Cup playoffs two seasons ago.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Number 5 Pittsburgh got a scare from Rhode
Island but was able to wear down the Rams and get an 83-75 win to
open the college basketball season last night. The Panthers saw 24
points from Brad Wanamaker, while Ashton Gibbs scored 22. The Rams
kept it close by draining 14 3-pointers.
NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL has decided it won't change the start
time for the Eagles' November 21st matchup against the New York
Giants. The game will stay on Sunday night. The league could have
moved another game into that slot under its flexible scheduling
policy but has opted to leave the schedule as is.
NEW YORK (AP) - There will be no fines or suspensions for Eagles
safeties Quintin Mikell or Kurt Coleman for Sunday's hit that gave
Indianapolis receiver Austin Collie a concussion. Coleman was
penalized for unnecessary roughness after the hit. The league says
the helmet-to-helmet contact was a result of Collie's being driven
toward Coleman by Mikell's legal hit.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After setting a home attendance record this
season, the Phillies will be raising ticket prices for most seats
at Citizens Bank Park for next year. The team says prices will rise
from $2 to $5 for most areas of the park. The Phillies sold out
every game at home this year.
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Lackawanna County officials have a buyer
for the area's Triple-A baseball team in a deal that includes a $40
million overhaul of the stadium. The Times-Tribune reports the
county and the stadium authority have laid out the framework of a
deal with SWB Yankees to buy the franchise for $14.6 million.
