PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick led three scoring drives, the
first-team defense pitched a shutout and the Eagles beat the
Cleveland Browns 24-14 on a rain-soaked night. Vick took a lot of
hits and had to escape trouble quite a bit. Still, he managed to
complete 10 of 18 passes for 98 yards. He ran for 24 yards and a
touchdown.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - David Freese had a go-ahead two-run single in
the fifth and Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer, leading the St.
Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates last
night. The Cardinals ended a three-game losing streak and moved
within 9 1/2 games of idle Milwaukee in the NL Central. Pittsburgh
lost for the sixth time in nine games.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With weather a concern in Pennsylvania
throughout the weekend, the Phillies elected to move Sunday's game
vs. Florida at Citizens Bank Park to tomorrow, creating a day-night
doubleheader with the Marlins. Gametimes tomorrow are set for 1:05
p.m. and 7:05 p.m.
CLEVELAND (AP) - Jim Thome has accepted a trade to the Cleveland
Indians from the Minnesota Twins. The Indians are hoping their
career leader in home runs can help them catch first-place Detroit
in the AL Central. Thome spent 12 seasons with Cleveland from
1991-2002, hitting a team-record 334 homers. He hit 52 in his final
year before signing as a free agent with Philadelphia.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers punters Daniel Sepulveda
and Jeremy Kapinos are in one of the few position battles up for
grabs on the defending AFC champions. The two are getting equal
playing time during the preseason, and their numbers are nearly
identical heading into tomorrow's game against Atlanta.
NEW YORK (AP) - With Hurricane Irene taking aim at the East
Coast, Major League Soccer has changed times or dates for three
games scheduled this weekend. The Philadelphia Union have moved a
game against New England from Sunday to Wednesday night. The game
has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday at PPL Park in Chester,
Pennsylvania.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby's agent says there's no set
timetable for the Pittsburgh Penguins star to return from a
concussion, though Crosby is expected to make a full recovery.
Agent Pat Brisson discussed Crosby's recovery and medical status on
the team's official web site.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Hagen Danner homered and struck
out 12, and Huntington Beach, California, spoiled the Pennsylvania
party at the Little League World Series with a 2-0 victory over the
hometown heroes from Clinton County last night. California will
face Billings, Montana, in the U.S. final tomorrow. Montana beat
California 1-0 in seven innings Wednesday night. Pennsylvania was
eliminated.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - Yoshiki Suzuki hit two
opposite-field homers to left and Hamamatsu City, Japan, held off
Maracay, Venezuela, 9-6 yesterday to advance to the Little League
World Series international final. Japan is two victories away from
successfully defending the Little League crown won in 2010 by a
squad from Tokyo.
