MIAMI (AP) - Pinch-hitter Brett Carroll capped a two-run rally
against closer Brad Lidge in the ninth inning with an RBI single,
giving the Florida Marlins a 7-6 victory over the Philadelphia
Phillies last night. Jorge Cantu tied it with a single off Lidge,
who blew his major league-leading 11th save opportunity. The
Phillies are in Milwaukee starting tonight.
MIAMI (AP) - Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz has been sent to
Philadelphia for an MRI on his sprained left wrist.Phillies general
manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said yesterday test results showed no
structural damage to the wrist. Amaro added Ruiz will rejoin the
team in Milwaukee and is expected to return to the field in
three-to-five days.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joey Votto went 4 for 5 and scored three runs,
Homer Bailey allowed two runs and the Cincinnati Reds continued the
Pittsburgh Pirates' losing with a 12-2 win last night. Brandon
Phillips, Scott Rolen, Jay Bruce, Laynce Nix and Corky Miller each
had two RBIs. The Pirates are 3-22 in their past 25. The series in
Pittsburgh ends this afternoon.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donovan McNabb did not practice yesterday
because of a broken rib that forced him to miss the Eagles' 48-22
loss to New Orleans last Sunday. Kevin Kolb would make his second
straight start if McNabb can't play against Kansas City this week.
Coach Andy Reid isn't sure if Jeff Garcia or Michael Vick would be
the backup quarterback.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's Sean Lee hopes to play in
Saturday's Big Ten opener against Iowa, though the standout
linebacker is unsure when he'll return to practice. The Nittany
Lions' defensive leader said yesterday that the left knee he
sprained last week against Temple is feeling better. It's up to team
doctors to determine whether he's healthy.
