PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Twins' Carl Pavano outpitched Phillies
ace Roy Halladay in a 4-1 win in Philadelphia yesterday. Pavano won
his third straight by giving up just four hits in his second
complete game on the season. The only run Pavano allowed came on
Wilson Valdez's sixth-inning homer. He retired the next 13 batters
before Ryan Howard's two-out single in the ninth.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have called up catcher Dane
Sardinha from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Sardinha was hitting .254
with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 38 games. To make room for
Sardinha on the 25-man roster, right-hander Scott Mathieson was
designated for assignment.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are looking forward to getting
some help from the return of injured star shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
MLB.com reports Rollins went 0-for-2 with an RBI in a rehab game
for Class A Clearwater over the weekend. It was likely his last
appearance before returning to the Phillies this week after a
strained right calf.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pedro Alvarez's sacrifice fly in the eighth
inning drove in the go-ahead run as the Pirates withstood a big
game from Carlos Santana to beat the Indians 5-3 yesterday. The win
is Pittsburgh's second in a row after dropping 12 straight.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have fired a pierogi. The team has
let go one of the people who races at PNC Park in the
dumpling-shaped costumes because he criticized the contract
extensions given to general manager Neal Huntington and manager
John Russell on his Facebook page. But all is not lost for Andrew
Kurtz. He's been offered a job as a racing hot dog from a minor
league team in Washington, Pa.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Nashville Predators have acquired
defenseman Ryan Parent from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman
Dan Hamhuis and a conditional pick in the 2011 draft. Parent was
Nashville's first pick in the 2005 draft and was sent to
Philadelphia in 2007 in a trade that brought Peter Forsberg to
Nashville.
