PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard homered twice, Chase Utley also went deep and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 9-5 on last night. The Phillies have won three straight and four of five after a 5-14 skid dropped them into third place in the NL East. Howard went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and set a career high with four extra-base hits.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Carlos Santana reached base four times and hit an RBI double to help the Cleveland Indians extend Pittsburgh's second-longest losing streak in 55 years to 12 games with a 4-3 win over the Pirates last night. Fausto Carmona won his second consecutive start, and Santana capped a four-run seventh inning put Cleveland up 4-0.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Allen Iverson's personal manager says Iverson is working out and "absolutely" wants to return to the NBA next season. Iverson returned to the Philadelphia 76ers in December but took a leave of absence in March because of family issues, including his ill daughter. Manager Gary Moore says the girl is now "doing very well."
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Mt. Lebanon pitcher Geena Badolato tossed a perfect game yesterday to leave the team to the state PIAA AAAA softball title with a 1-0 win over Central Bucks South. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the only scoring in the game came from Tess Apke's first inning home run.
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell is the 36-hole leader at three under par at the U.S. Open. Phil Mickelson surged into contention with a 5-under 66 and is tied for second with two-time U.S. Open winner Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson and Japan's Ryo Ishikawa, two shots behind McDowell.
GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Sherri Steinhauer has the first-round lead at the ShopRite LPGA Classic with a 7-under 64 and a one-shot lead over Natalie Gulbis and Spain's Tania Elosegui. Japan's Ai Miyazato, a three-time LPGA winner this year, was in a group two shots back.
WASHINGTON (AP) - With President Barack Obama in attendance, Washington Nationals sensation Stephen Strasburg set a record for most strikeouts by a pitcher in his first three major league starts in Washington's 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Chicago White Sox. The 21-year-old right-hander had 10 strikeouts through seven innings to give Strasburg 32 strikeouts, beating the record of 29 set by the Houston Astros' J.R. Richard in his first three starts in 1971.
NEW YORK (AP) - The hottest team in baseball is the New York Mets, who posted their eighth straight victory by beating the New York Yankees 4-0. With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Francisco Rodriguez struck out Derek Jeter and retired Nick Swisher on a foulout to end it.
JOHANNESBURG (AP) - After coming back from a goal down to tie England 1-1 in their opener, the Americans spotted Slovenia a 2-0 halftime lead before fighting back for a 2-2 draw. The U.S. will have to beat Algeria on Wednesday to have any chance of moving on at the World Cup.
