PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez broke up Cole Hamels' bid
for a no-hitter in the seventh inning with the first of two solo
homers and the San Diego Padres went on to beat the Phillies 3-1
last night. Hamels gave up three hits and two runs in eight
innings, losing his third straight start.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Carlos Silva allowed one run over seven
innings, Ryan Theriot scored four times and the Chicago Cubs beat
the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 yesterday. Silva gave up four hits,
struck out five and walked one in his first start against
Pittsburgh since 2003.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have drafted
hard-throwing Texas high school pitcher Jameson Taillon (TAI'-ohn)
with the Number 2 pick in the baseball draft. The Pirates are
hoping he'll be the impact starter they have failed so frequently
to land. Taillon's fastball has been clocked at 99 miles per hour.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have another day off before they
have to deal with the Chicago Blackhawks again. And Philadelphia
seemingly has Chicago right where it wants, at home in the Wachovia
Center, where the Flyers are 9-1 in the playoffs - including 2-0 in
the finals.
CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville expects
his team to come out tomorrow in Philadelphia with the same
aggressive approach it has taken so far against the Flyers. He
called Game 6 the biggest game ever for him and most of his players
and said they'll have to channel their emotions and withstand a
certain early hard charge from the Flyers.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Blackhawks' 7-4 win over the Flyers earned
the highest preliminary television rating for a nonovertime Game 5
in the Stanley Cup finals in eight years. Sunday night's game on
NBC drew a 4.0 overnight rating and 7 share. That's up 54 percent
from the 2.6 for Game 5 of the Detroit-Pittsburgh series last year.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - La Salle men's basketball coach John
Giannini has agreed to a new multiyear contract. Terms of the deal
were not released. Giannini has an 83-97 record in six seasons. He
has a career coaching record of 380-246, including coaching stints
at Rowan University and Maine.
