CHICAGO (AP) - The Flyers are on the brink of elimination after
a 7-4 loss to the Blackhawks last night in Game 5 of the Stanley
Cup Finals. Dustin Byfuglien scored two goals and had two assists
for Chicago. Chicago can capture the Stanley Cup for the first time
since 1961 with a victory Wednesday night in Philadelphia in Game
6.
CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Pronger and Philadelphia's stiff defense
suddenly went soft last night. After pushing the Blackhawks around
for the better part of the Stanley Cup finals, Pronger and his
blueline mates ran out of steam in the 7-4 loss. The Flyers were
never able to recover from the 3-0 lead Chicago posted in the first
period.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Padres knocked off the Phillies 6-5
yesterday after a pinch-hit single from Oscar Salazar in the 10th
inning drove in the winning run for San Diego. The Padres' Chase
Headley had four hits, including a single off Danys Baez to open
the 10th. Salazar's single drove Headley in for the winning run two
batters later.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A sacrifice fly from Freddy Sanchez in the
10th scored the winning run for the San Francisco Giants in a 6-5
victory in Pittsburgh yesterday. Sanchez went 7 for 13 in his first
series in Pittsburgh since being traded to the Giants in July. The
Bucs' Jeff Clement struck out with runners on second and third to
end the game in the bottom of the 10th.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates pitching prospect Brad Lincoln may
make his major league debut in Washington. Pirates general manager
Neal Huntington says Lincoln might be called up to start Wednesday
against the Nationals. Lincoln was the Pirates' 2006 first-round
draft pick. He's 6-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A
Indianapolis.
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) - Denny Hamlin won again at Pocono, pulling
away from teammate Kyle Busch following a late restart yesterday in
the 500-mile race at the massive 2.5-mile oval. The victory was
Hamlin's fourth of the season and fourth in nine career starts at
the "tricky triangle."
PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says the
conference's timetable for potential expansion might be moved up
since the Pac-10 has revealed plans for its own expansion. Penn
State's Graham Spanier and the conferences 10 other school
presidents and chancellors met for about 4 1/2 hours yesterday.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Matthew Goss won a sprint to the finish line
to win the 156-mile Philadelphia International Championship pro
cycling race yesterday. Goss finished second in the race in 2007.
He emerged ahead of the pack with a time of 6 hours, 15 minutes, 46
seconds. Ina Teutenberg won the 57.6-mile Women's Liberty Classic
for the fourth time in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 39 seconds.
