PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers will play for the Stanley Cup for the first time in more than a decade. Philadelphia punched its ticket to the finals with a 4-2 series-clinching win over the
Montreal Canadiens. The Flyers needed a shootout win in the final game of the regular season just to get in the playoffs, now they'll play the Blackhawks for the ultimate prize. Game 1 is Saturday in Chicago.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia fans flooded streets of the city following the Flyers' 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens that sends them to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 13 years. A huge crowd of fans, many clad in the team's orange and black, gathered in the Mayfair section of northeast Philadelphia after last night's win in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.
CINCINNATI (AP) - The Reds used a five-run fourth inning to take down the Pirates in Pittsburgh last night. Reds pitcher Aaron Harang singled home a run and chugged around the bases to score another during the 7-5 win. He allowed four runs in 6-plus innings. Pirates left-hander Brian Burres walked the first two batters in the fourth to start the pivotal Reds rally.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies have activated catcher Brian Schneider off the 15-day disabled list. Schneider went on the DL May 9th with a left Achilles' strain. He went 0 for
8 in three rehab appearances. He was batting .167 with three runs scored for the Phillies. To make room on the 25-man roster, the team has designated catcher Paul Hoover for assignment.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Doug Collins says he's happy to be back home in Philadelphia coaching the 76ers. The former TNT analyst was the team's top overall pick in the 1973 draft. He says turning the Sixers into a championship contender won't be a quick fix. The team will get some help next month with the Number 2 overall pick in the draft.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh police are trying to reconcile two stories given by three men arrested for trespassing at Heinz Field over the weekend. Police say the out-of-state men told them they sneaked into the Pittsburgh Steelers' home stadium Sunday morning because one of them had lost a wallet. But one of them tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review they sneaked in to take pictures. They're due in court on Thursday.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police in Philadelphia are trying to question a city resident in connection with vandalism done to a car of a Montreal sportswriter outside the Wachovia Center during Game 1 of the Flyers-Canadiens series. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports about $1,000 in damage was done to the car of Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette and his Quebec license plate was stolen.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - An Ohio man is facing child endangerment charges after police say he left his 6-year-old daughter at a Pittsburgh restaurant while he tailgated before a Pirates game.
Police say Robert Strohmeyer left his daughter inside a restaurant near PNC Park on Saturday while he went off to drink in a nearby parking lot. The man's 8-year-old son returned to retrieve the girl. Strohmeyer was being held on $2,000 bail.
BOSTON (AP) - There was no clincher on the Boston Celtics' home court. Dwight Howard had 32 points and 16 rebounds and Jameer Nelson hit a pair of three-pointers in overtime to give the Orlando Magic a 96-92 win and cut the Celtics' series lead in the Eastern Conference final to 3-1 as the series heads back to Orlando for Game 5 Wednesday night.
CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the market for a new coach after Mike Brown was fired following the Cavs' second-round exit from the playoffs. The Cavs are facing an
uncertain future, largely because of LeBron James' status as a free agent as of July 1.
PHOENIX (AP) - Despite a broken nose, Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash is expected in the starting lineup Tuesday night when the Suns try to even their Western Conference playoff series against the L.A. Lakers, who own a 2-1 series lead. Nash has a small nasal fracture from a fourth-quarter collision with Derek Fisher but says he's had "a handful" of broken noses and expected to be fine for Game 4.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz homered to back the strong pitching of Clay Buchholz and lead the resurgent Boston Red Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox have won three straight and are a season-best four games over .500.
