PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ryan Doumit homered with two outs in the 10th inning off Takashi Saito for his third hit, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 yesterday and avoid a three-game sweep. Doumit's first career game-ending homer was his fourth of the season and ended Atlanta's five-game winning streak and Pittsburgh's three-game losing streak.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield has his first victory in nearly a year after outdueling Roy Halladay in an 8-3 win over the Phillies yesterday. Kevin Youkilis tripled, homered and scored three runs for Boston. Wakefield gave up five hits and two walks in eight shutout innings. Halladay allowed seven runs on eight hits in five-plus innings.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are the first team in the major leagues to surpass one million in attendence this year. Yesterday's sellout was the Phillies' 65th in a row.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers can advance to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1997 with a win tonight over Montreal in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Flyers aren't taking their 3-1 advantage in the series for granted. The Canadiens have come back twice to win a series, going 5-0 in elimination games.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Three men have been arrested after police say they snuck into the Steelers' Heinz Field by scaling a fence yesterday. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the men have been charged with criminal tresspass and conspiracy. Police say no damage has been done to the facility.
PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix Suns are alive in the NBA Western Conference finals. The Suns rode a 42-point, 11-rebound performance by Amare Stoudemire in their 118-109 victory that cut the L.A. Lakers series lead to 2-1 heading into Tuesday night's Game 4 in the Valley of the Sun.
NEW YORK (AP) - Jason Bay homered twice and drove in three runs as the New York Mets roughed up CC Sabathia for six runs on 10 hits in five innings in beating the New York Yankees 6-4. Closer Francisco Rodriguez struck out Alex Rodriguez with two runners on in the ninth as the Mets won two of three in the Subway Series.
IRVING, Texas (AP) - Jason Day got the first win of his PGA Tour career at the Byron Nelson, which will be remembered for the remarkable Tour debut by Jordan Spieth, a 16-year-old
Dallas area high school junior who was within three shots of the lead on the back nine but finished tied for 16th.
