REDS-PIRATES
Cueto's 1-hitter for Reds beats Pirates, 9-0
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Johnny Cueto pitched a one-hitter for his first major league complete game, allowing only a third-inning single that went off shortstop Paul Janish's glove, and the
Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-0 on Tuesday night for their fourth consecutive win. The Pirates' only hit was by Ronny Cedeno - and it nearly wasn't one. Janish managed to deflect Cedeno's one-out grounder into left field, barely missing making the play. Chris Heisey backed up Cueto's superbly pitched game with his first three major league hits, including a pair of singles and a two-run homer in the eighth against Jeff Karstens. Heisey, making his second career start, was hitless in his first seven at-bats.
PHILLIES-ROCKIES PPD
Phillies-Rockies game rained out
DENVER (AP) - Even with a cold, steady rain drenching Coors Field and puddles overtaking the tarp, the last thing the Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies wanted was a night off.
Now they're scheduled for a day-night doubleheader Wednesday --when the forecast calls for snow -- to make up for Tuesday's rainout. The pitching matchups will remain the same with Phillies ace Roy Halladay (6-1) making his first start in his native Colorado since high school in the 1:10 p.m. MDT opener. He'll face Rockies right-hander Aaron Cook (1-3). In the 6:40 p.m. MDT nightcap, it'll be Jamie Moyer (4-2) for Philadelphia facing Jason Hammel (0-2), who will be activated from the 15-day disabled list. Hammel landed on the DL with a strained right groin last month, stemming from a mechanical flaw in his delivery.
PHILLIES-BLUE JAYS RELOCATED
Phillies-Blue Jays series moves to Philadelphia
NEW YORK (AP) - Global politics has upstaged baseball in Toronto. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday that the Phillies-Blue Jays series will be played in Philadelphia because of the G20 Summit. The three-game series June 25-27 will be relocated from
Toronto's Rogers Centre to Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park because of security issues for the G20 Summit. World leaders will gather at the convention center next to the Toronto ballpark.
The game would have been ace Roy Halladay's first return visit after he was traded to the Phillies in the offseason. The rescheduled games will be considered home games of the Blue
Jays, who will bat last, and the DH will be used.
STEELERS-ROETHLISBERGER
Steelers uncertain when Roethlisberger will return
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers resume voluntary offseason workouts next week, but it's unclear whether suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be allowed to participate. On April 21, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended the two-time Super Bowl winner for the first six games of the season and also ordered him to undergo a behavioral evaluation following a March incident in which a 20-year-old college student accused him
of sexual assault in Milledgeville, Ga. The case will not be prosecuted. The Steelers are not certain when Roethlisberger might be cleared by Goodell to resume workouts. Voluntary practices are scheduled for May 18-20, May 25-27, June 1-3 and June 8-10.
ROETHLISBERGER-PITTSBURGH
Roethlisberger: Can't cut him, can't stand him
PITTSBURGH (AP) - For all of his off-field problems, Ben Roethlisberger is still a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Numerous fans in a proud city where the quarterback's number 7
jerseys could be seen everywhere would like to know why. They've ripped "Big Ben" bumper stickers off their cars, tossed out their expensive replica jerseys and distanced themselves from one of the franchise's most successful players. The reason why the Steelers have kept him despite his six-game suspension following a sexual assault allegation in Georgia is simple: They have too much invested in him to let go. They've paid Roethlisberger about $50 million in salary and bonuses the past three seasons, and an aging team with a defense that may be on the downslide would have little chance to win the Super Bowl without him. Also, he wasn't charged in Georgia. Still, some fans wish he'd simply go away.
STEELERS-SWEED
Steelers' Sweed out for the season
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed has been placed on the injured reserve list because of a torn left Achilles tendon, a move that means he cannot play this season.
Sweed was waived after he was hurt during a May 2 minicamp practice. He was placed on the reserve/injury list after clearing waivers. Sweed, a second-round draft pick from Texas in 2008, missed the final two games of last season for personal reasons. He finished the season with one catch. To replace Sweed, the Steelers signed wide receiver Isaiah Williams, who signed with Baltimore as an undrafted rookie last year but was cut before the season began.
CANADIENS-PENGUINS
Game 7, again: Canadiens take Pens to last game
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins' record in home Game 7s isn't very good. The Canadiens' Game 7 record this spring couldn't be any better. For the second successive playoff series, the Canadiens have forced a Game 7. After upsetting NHL regular season champion Washington in the first round, the Canadiens will play another against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Penguins in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. The Penguins are 2-4 in Game 7s at Mellon Arena, beating only the Washington Capitals twice. Pittsburgh did win two Game 7s on the road last spring, defeating Washington and Detroit. Montreal forced the Game 7 by getting two more goals from Mike Cammalleri in a 4-3 victory Monday night. Cammalleri has outscored Penguins star Sidney Crosby 6-1 in the series.
BRUINS-FLYERS
Flyers believe they can win series vs. Boston
VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - The Flyers believe they can complete their comeback from a 3-0 deficit and eliminate the Bruins. The Flyers have won two straight games entering Wednesday's Game
6 and say momentum has shifted toward their side. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders are the only NHL teams to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a
best-of-seven playoff series. In the net for the Flyers will be Michael Leighton, who stepped
in for Brian Boucher. Boucher was injured in Philadelphia's 4-0 Game 5 win. The Flyers say Boucher has a sprained MCL in his left knee and could miss up to a month.
BIG TEN EXPANSION
Big Ten quashes latest expansion rumors
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany e-mailed conference officials Tuesday to stamp out a rumor that four schools had already been offered a chance to join the league. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Tuesday that Delany had quashed a report the Big Ten had offered expansion spots to Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Rutgers. The Big Ten holds annual meetings next week in Chicago involving athletic officials, faculty representatives and football and men's and women's basketball coaches. But Smith said the meetings were routine and nothing would be decided about expansion. The conference is looking at expanding from its current 11 members so it can increase the reach of its cable network and hold a league championship title game.
CLEVELAND (AP) - The Boston Celtics are one victory away from reaching the NBA's Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics held league MVP LeBron James to 15 points on 3-of-14 shooting and routed the Cleveland Cavaliers 120-88 to take a 3-2 series lead heading into Game 6 Thursday in Boston.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks are going to NHL's Western Conference finals for the second straight year. Troy Brouwer and Kris Versteeg scored 36 seconds apart early in the second period and the Blackhawks eliminated the Vancouver
Canucks 5-1 in Game 6 and will play the San Jose Sharks, the West's top-seeded team, with a trip to the Stanley Cup finals on the line.
