WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Monday
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies got home runs from Placido
Polanco, Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino in a 5-3 rubber match win
over the Braves. The Phils survived a rough start from Cole Hamels
and got some big help from their bullpen on a chilly day in
Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies catcher Brian Schneider has been
placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left Achilles' strain.
Schneider started Saturday's 4-1 loss to Atlanta and strained his
Achilles during the game. Paul Hoover has been brought up from
Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Schneider's spot.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Cardinals batted around twice during big
innings in an 11-4 rout over the Pirates. It's the Pirates 12th
loss of six runs or more this season. The Bucs have been an enigma
so far this year. They're 10-2 in games decided by two runs or
fewer, but they have been blown out in more than one-third of their
games.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates right-hander Jeff Karstens is heading
to the bullpen. Pirates manager John Russell says Karstens will
work as a reliever for now because the Bucs rotation is too
crowded. Left-hander Brian Burres will start Friday against Chicago
and right-hander Ross Ohlendor will come off the disabled list
tonight to start against the Reds.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates right-hander Chris Jakubauskas
(jak-uh-BOW'-skuhs) is making slow progress as he recovers from a
concussion he suffered when he was hit in the head by a line drive
on April 24th in Houston. Jakubauskas remains on the disabled list.
He felt dizzy after attempting to play a game of catch on Friday
and the team isn't rushing his recovery.
MONTREAL (AP) - The Penguins are looking to close out the
Canadiens on their home ice in tonight's Game 6 in Montreal. The
Pens hold a 3 games to 2 edge in the best-of-seven series. The
Penguins aren't taking the Habs lightly, though. Captain Sidney
Crosby says his team expects "desperation" from Montreal and says
Pittsburgh has to make sure it plays its "best game of the
series."
WILMINGTON, Mass. (AP) - The Flyers are fighting to stay alive
tonight in their playoff series with the Bruins. Philadelphia is
down 3 games to 1 after taking Game 4 Friday 5-4 in overtime. The
series has returned to Boston for Game 5.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The 76ers extensive coaching search has
continued with more interviews. Former Detroit player Bill Laimbeer
met with the 76ers on Sunday in Dallas. The team has also talked to
Avery Johnson and Doug Collins. The Sixers fired Eddie Jordan last
month after the team went 27-55 in his lone season
