WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have snapped a 22-game
losing streak in Milwaukee with a 7-3 victory over the Brewers.
Ryan Doumit hit a grand slam and Ronny Cedeno had a solo homer in
the Bucs' five-run ninth inning. Pirate starter Jeff Karstens went
six-plus innings, giving up just two runs hours after being called
up from Triple-A Indianapolis.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Phillies have been knocked out of first
place in the NL East for the first time this year after a 6-2 loss
to the Giants in San Francisco. Jamie Moyer couldn't slow down the
Giants' hot bats. The Phillies are now a half-game back of the New
York Mets.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - With Ryan Howard now locked up until at
least 2016, the Philles may now turn their attention to the
contract of outfielder Jayson Werth. Werth is a free agent after
this year and Phillies general manager Reuben Amaro tells MLB.com
that the big contract extension given to Howard doesn't prevent the
team from re-signing Werth.

READING, Pa. (AP) - Phillies closer Brad Lidge appears closer to
returning to the big league squad after striking out four in two
innings during a rehab appearance with the Reading Phillies last
night. Meanwhile, Nationals prospect Stephen Strasburg stole the
show by throwing five no-hit innings for the Harrisburg Senators
and driving in the game's only run.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers say forward Ian Laperriere has a
brain contusion and mild concussion and is probably out for the
rest of the season. Laperriere was hit by a puck while blocking a
shot during the third period of Thursday's first-round series
clinching game with the New Jersey Devils. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren
says Laperriere won't require surgery.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - 76ers chairman Ed Snider is shooting down a
Yahoo.com report that claims Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown is
positioning himself to return to the Sixers as president and
perhaps coach. The Philadelphia Inqirer reports Brown says he won't
coach anywhere but Charlotte. But he also says he has to talk to
his family, who still lives in the Philadelphia area.

BELL ACRES, Pa. (AP) - Former Steelers quarterback Mike Tomczak
is facing assault charges following a dispute with his wife at
their Pittsburgh-area home. Authorities tell KDKA-TV that Tomczak
allegedly lunged at his wife and stepped on her foot, but didn't
hit her. He's charged with two counts of simple assault.

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - The Philadelphia Union dropped a matchup
with the New York Red Bulls 2-1 last night in the opening round of
the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Conor Chinn's two first-half goals
were all New York needed to outpace the Union. Sebastien Le Toux
scored in the 68th minute for Philadelphia, which also lost 2-1 to
New York in a regular-season MLS game on Saturday.
