WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers now hold a commanding three games
to one lead over the New Jersey Devils thanks to a 4-1 victory in
Philadelphia last night. Jeff Carter scored two goals and Danny
Briere had one to end their playoff scoring droughts. The Flyers
can knock New Jersey out of the playoffs with a win in Game 5 on
Thursday.

OTTAWA (AP) - Sidney Crosby had four points, including two of
Pittsburgh's five second period goals in last night's 7-4 Penguins
win over the Ottawa Senators. Pittsburgh now owns a 3-1 series lead
over Ottawa. The two teams combined for eight goals in the second.
That's one shy of the playoff record for a single period.

NEW YORK (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins' Jordan Staal has been
nominated for the Selke Trophy, joining fellow finalists Pavel
Datsyuk of Detroit and Ryan Kesler of Vancouver for the award given
to the NHL's top defensive forward. This is Staal's first Selke
nomination. He finished second in the league in short-handed
minutes during the regular season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Seven shutout innings from Dave Bush helped
the Brewers cruise past the Pirates 8-1 last night. Bush allowed
just three hits and four walks for Milwaukee. Pirates starter
Charlie Morton's ERA has climbed to 16.55 after he allowed five
runs while retiring only three batters.

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves notched a 4-3 victory against
the Phillies last night in a game they had trailed 3-0 in the ninth
inning. Phillies closer Ryan Madson allowed back-to-back homers
with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The Braves then won the
game in the 10th with a solo homer by Nate McLouth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Byron Leftwich's return to Pittsburgh is a
sign the Steelers expect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to be
suspended for the start of the season. Leftwich backed up
Roethlisberger in 2008 and is familiar with the team's offensive
system. The Steelers dealt a seventh-round pick to Tampa Bay for
Leftwich.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has been a
surprise participant in the team's voluntary practices this week.
Normally Polamalu trains in California in the offseason. Knee
injuries limited the five-time Pro Bowler to just three games last
season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers will play five games in prime
time this season, including a Halloween night matchup in New
Orleans. Pittsburgh also plays a Monday night game against
Cincinnati and a Thursday night contest in Carolina in December.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donavon McNabb will return to Philadelphia
for the first time with the Washington Redskins on Sunday, October
3rd. McNabb was traded to Washington on Easter Sunday for a
second-round pick in this week's draft and another pick next year.
