WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday
CHICAGO (AP) - Derrick Rose scored a career-high 39 points, Kirk
Hinrich (HYN'-rik) added a season-high 30 and the Chicago Bulls
helped their playoff chances with a 101-93 victory over Boston. The
eighth-place Bulls lead Toronto by a game in the Eastern Conference
and will make the playoffs as long as they finish with a better
record, meaning they need a win at Charlotte or a loss by the
Raptors to New York in the regular season-ending games tonight.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Jazz wrap up their NBA regular
season with a home game tonight against Phoenix that will determine
both teams' playoff seedings. The Jazz are riding high following
last night's 103-94 win at Golden State and could finish second
seed behind the L.A. Lakers, or drop as far as fifth with a loss.
TORONTO (AP) - Ricky Romero flirted with a no-hitter for Toronto
last night. Romero had the White Sox hitless until Alex Rios
slammed a two-run homer in the eighth inning of the Blue Jays' 4-2
win over Chicago. Romero and reliever Kevin Gregg combined on a
one-hitter.
UNDATED (AP) - Coaching carousel: Former Wright State coach Brad
Brownell is the new basketball coach at Clemson, replacing Oliver
Purnell, who recently accepted a seven-year deal worth $15 million
at DePaul. And Wake Forest has hired Colorado's Jeff Bzdelik
(behz-DEH'-lik) as the Demon Deacons new coach with a formal
announcement coming today.
UNDATED (AP) - The NHL's second season starts tonight with four
playoff openers. Defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh hosts
Ottawa, Philadelphia visits New Jersey, surprising Phoenix is home
to Detroit and Colorado visits Western Conference No. 1 seed San
Jose.
