PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates opened their season with an 11-5 romp over the Dodgers in sunny Pittsburgh yesterday. Garrett Jones homered in his first two at-bats for the Pirates, who one their fourth straight opening day matchup. Ryan Doumit had a three-run homer for Pittsburgh in the eighth inning.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates reliever Joel Hanrahan could be returning to the 25-man roster within a week. Hanrahan began the season on the disabled list because of a right elbow problem. Hanrahan is expected to pitch in the Pirates' minor league camp today and Thursday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have opened the season with the lowest payroll in baseball. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Pirates payroll stands at $35.4 million. It's the first time Pittsburgh has held baseball's low-payroll mark in 14 years.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Philadelphia's off-season acquisitions played a big role in yesterday's 11-1 opening day win in Washington. New ace Roy Halladay struck out nine over seven innings and allowed one run on six hits in his National League debut. Third baseman Placido Polanco did his part with a seventh inning grand slam for the Phils.
BOSTON (AP) - Could Pedro Martinez be returning to the Phillies? Martinez tells the Boston Herald he plans to start on a throwing program soon with the goal of signing a deal similar to the one-year, $1 million pact he got with the Phillies last July. He says the Phillies could wind up being his destination this year as well, but as he puts it "we'll see what happens with that."
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Phillies were without third base coach Davy Lopes yesterday. Lopes' brother died in a house fire in Rhode Island last week. Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel expects him to return to the team after the current six-game road trip.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Yesterday's sellout crowd in Washington was about evenly split between Phillies and Nationals supporters. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig was among those in attendance. He says the enormous interest on the part of traveling Phillies fans is "great for the sport."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Donovan McNabb never brought the Eagles a Super Bowl title, but he did lead the team to the big game and five NFC title matchups. McNabb leaves the team after being traded to Washington as the franchise leader in nearly every passing category
for the Eagles. Still, some in Philadelphia will remember the quarterback more for what he didn't accomplish, than what he did.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Minor league hockey will be played in Johnstown next year, after all. West Virginia's Wheeling Nailers plan to play 10 regular-season games and one preseason game next season at the Cambria County War Memorial. The Johnstown Chiefs are moving to Greenville, South Carolina, next season amid financial concerns.
