McGinley named Schuylkill County Scholar Athlete

Matt McGinley of Tri Valley was named the 2010 Schuylkill County Scholar Athlete last night. The 6 foot 5 Senior is a four year member of the Bulldogs football team and edged out 13 other young men for the title. The annual awards ceremony, presented by Chapter Number 25 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, is held annually to honor young men who excel on the football field and in the classroom.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brian Boucher stopped 32 shots and fiveplayers scored as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New JerseyDevils 5-1 last night. Matt Carle, Ville Leino, Kimmo Timonen,Lukas Krajicek and Simon Gagne scored for the Flyers, who broke afive-game losing streak. Ilya Kovalchuk scored for the Devils.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby netted two goals in regulation,then he and teammate Pascal Dupuis scored in the shootout as thePittsburgh Penguins rallied to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4yesterday. Tyler Kennedy also scored as the Penguins moved ahead ofNew Jersey 95-93 for the Atlantic Division lead and a likely Number2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) - Matt Garza pitched seven stronginnings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat a Pittsburgh Pirates split-squad8-2 yesterday. Ben Zobrist went 3 for 4 with a home run and atriple, and Carl Crawford was 2 for 3 with two doubles. Piratesstarter Ross Ohlendorf gave up 10 hits and eight runs in fourinnings and has a spring ERA of 9.82.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies canceledyesterday's scheduled exhibition game against a Pittsburgh Piratessplit-squad Sunday because of rain, but have yet to announce aresolution to the fifth starter race. With a week before the seasonopener, left-hander Jamie Moyer and right-hander Kyle Kendrick arebattling for a final spot in the rotation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers say Ben Roethlisbergerisn't likely to participate in off-season workouts this week as hadbeen expected. Roethlisberger has been accused of assault by a20-year-old Georgia college student, but he has not been charged inthe case. An investigation is ongoing.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh is making a strong push to host tothe NHL's next Winter Classic, matching the league's two signaturestars in the Penguins' Sidney Crosby and the Capitals' AlexOvechkin at Heinz Field. The Penguins played in the 2008 WinterClassic. But the NHL is believed to be favoring another Penguinsappearance because of the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pitt women's basketball team is losing itssophomore class. Pepper Wilson, Sarah Ogoke and Kate Popovec areleaving. Wilson started 27 games at center, averaging 7.4 pointsand 4.4 rebounds. Popovec averaged 2.9 points and 3.9 rebounds.Ogoke averaged 1 point and 1.4 rebounds in 28 games.
