WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

ATLANTA (AP) - Roy Halladay's first National League shutout is
in the books. Halladay gave up just five hits in a 2-0 win over
Atlanta last night. Halladay is living up the hype that came with
him when he joined the Phillies from Toronto in the offseason. He's
given up just 26 hits and three runs this year for an ERA of 0.82.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Brewers ripped the Pirates 8-0 in
Pittsburgh last night. Nine of the first 11 Pirates that faced
Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo struck out. He allowed three hits
and three walks in five innings. The Pirates' Zach Duke gave up
three homers and seven runs in his five-plus innings.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have recalled infielder Argenis
Diaz to shore up their injured infield. Diaz was batting .231 with
two RBIs for Triple-A Indianapolis. He's needed in the field with
both Andy LaRoche and Bobby Crosby out with injuries. Left-hander
Brian Burres was optioned to Indianapolis to make room on the
active roster for Diaz.

NEW YORK (AP) - Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been
suspended for six games without pay for violating the NFL's
personal conduct policy. Roethlisberger also has to undergo a
"comprehensive behavioral evaluation." The suspension could be
reduced to four games for good behavior after the evaluation is
completed.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Pennsylvania state trooper can't continue to
work as a personal assistant to Ben Roethlisberger because he was
there when the Pittsburgh Steelers star was accused of sexual
assault in Georgia. State police say Trooper Ed Joyner's outside
work exceeded the scope of what was permitted.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The Flyers can knock out the Devils and move
on to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with a
win in Game 5 tonight in New Jersey. Devils goaltender Martin
Brodeur has shaved his playoff beard in an effort to change his
team's luck.

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - Flyers forwards Jeff Carter and Simon
Gagne have been ruled out for tonight's playoff game against the
Devils. Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren says both
players hurt their right foot during Tuesday night's game. They are
listed as day-to-day.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is looking for some studs
to step up and take the place of its three departed linebackers.
Captain Sean Lee, Navarro Bowman and former walk-on Josh Hull are
all looking to get picked in this week's NFL draft. Nathan Stupar,
Chris Colasanti and Bani Gbadyu have been running with the
first-string defense in spring drills.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says
the conference's timetable for potential expansion hasn't changed
from the 12 to 18 months he first laid out in December. Delany
spoke to reporters during the BCS meetings in Arizona. He told the
media he has no announcements to make to the fellow conference
commissioners at the meeting.
