MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Pirates rallied for a 6-5 14 inning win in
Milwaukee. Garrett Jones drove in the tying run with two outs in
the ninth. Ryan Doumit tied the game at four with a leadoff homer
off Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman. Pirates reliever D.J. Carrasco
got the victory with three scoreless innings.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Phillies won a wild one in San
Francisco 7-6 over the Giants in 11 innings yesterday. The Phils
were down 4-1 with 2 outs in the ninth before Jayson Werth smacked
a three-run double to send it into extra innings. Wilson Valdez
doubled home the go-ahead run for Philadelphia in the 11th.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has begun
jogging again, but he's not sure when he'll start true running as
part of his recovery from a strained right calf. Rollins says he's
not going to rush his recovery like he did with an ankle injury two
years ago. The former NL MVP has been on the disabled list since
April 14th.
READING, Pa. (AP) - Joe Blanton had a rough outing in what was
likely his last rehab start before returning to the Phillies'
rotation. Blanton gave up five runs on five hits in five innings
for the Reading Phillies. He's expected to rejoin the Phillies
Monday in time to pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With Montreal upsetting top-seeded
Washington in Game 7 of their opening round NHL playoff series,
second round matchups for the Penguins and Flyers are set. The
Penguins will meet the Canadiens in a series that starts Friday
night in Pittsburgh. Philadelphia will start their series on the
road against Boston on Saturday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have recalled seven players from
minor league Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Forwards Dustin Jeffrey, Nick
Johnson, Mark Letestu, Eric Tangradi and Tim Wallace along with
defenseman Steve Wagner and goaltender John Curry are joining the
Pens for the rest of the postseason.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly close
to contacting Larry Brown about their coaching vacancy. Brown has
just finished his second season coaching the Charlotte Bobcats.
There's been speculation that he might consider retiring from
coaching to take a front-office job in Philadelphia, but an NBA
source tells The Philadelphia Inquirer the Sixers aren't interested
in Brown as an executive.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The mother of a University of Pennsylvania
football player found dead earlier this week says he committed
suicide. Katherine Brearley says her son Owen Thomas was very
self-directed but that his intensity "spiraled out of control."
The defensive end from Allentown had recently been voted a
co-captain of the Quakers.
