ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The Boston Celtics have a two-games-to-none
lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference finals following a 95-92 win
at Orlando. Paul Pierce finished with 28 points and Rajon Rondo
(RAH'-zhahn RAHN'-doh) added 25 while the two helped the Celtics
limit the Magic to 39 percent shooting. Orlando erased an 11-point
deficit in the second half but scored just two points after taking
a 90-89 lead late in the contest.
SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) - The Washington Wizards and Philadelphia
76ers were the big winners in last night's NBA draft lottery. The
Wizards claimed the top pick despite having the sixth-best shot of
winning the lottery. The Sixers jumped up to second, and New Jersey
dropped to third after posting the league's worst record at
12-and-70.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Leighton turned back 30 shots in his
second consecutive shutout as the Philadelphia Flyers blanked
Montreal 3-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.
Simon Gagne (see-MOHN' GAHN'-yay) and Danny Briere (bree-EHR')
provided power-play goals to support Leighton, who hasn't allowed a
goal in almost 166 minutes. Jaroslav Halak (hah-LAHK') stopped 20
shots for the Canadiens, who host Game 3 tomorrow night.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Dustin Byfuglien (BUF'-lihn) and
Jonathan Toews (tayvz) tallied on deflections 90 seconds apart in
the second period, the difference in the Chicago Blackhawks' 4-2
win at San Jose. Andrew Ladd and Troy Brouwer also scored as the
Blackhawks took a two-games-to-none lead in the NHL's Western
Conference finals. Chicago has won a record-tying seven consecutive
road playoff games.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Baseball's hottest hitter has been placed on
the disabled list because of a broken pinkie. Los Angeles Dodgers
outfielder Andre Ethier (EE'-thee-ur) was injured while taking a
swing in the indoor batting cage in San Diego before Saturday's
game against the Padres. Ethier is leading the majors with 38 RBIs
and a .392 average, and he's tied for the NL lead with 11 home
runs.
