PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kyle Kendrick threw eight impressive innings
and the Phillies offense rocked its way to a dozen runs in a 12-2
win over Pittsburgh last night. Kendrick allowed two runs and five
hits, striking out four. Ryan Howard hit a grand slam and had six
RBIs for the Phils while Jayson Werth had a three-run homer.
Pirates starter Charlie Morton gave up six runs on six hits in four
innings.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jimmy Rollins returned to the Phillies'
lineup with two hits and an RBI last night after missing 29 games
with a calf injury. The three-time All-Star shortstop and 2007 NL
MVP batted in the Number 3 spot in the batting order. Rollins
wasn't in his usual leadoff spot because Chase Utley, who normally
bats third, was sent home with flulike symptoms.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - To make room for Jimmy Rollins on the
roster, the Phillies have designated infielder Wilson Valdez for
assignment. Valdez was hitting .231 in several games as an infield
replacement.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies reliever Brad Lidge has received a
cortisone shot in his surgically repaired right elbow and is
expected to begin a throwing program in the next several days. The
closer began the year on the disabled list following offseason
surgery on his pitching elbow.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Canadiens remain confident about goalie
Jaroslav Halak, even after he allowed four goals to the Flyers on
14 shots before being pulled from the net in Game 1 of the Eastern
Conference finals on Sunday night. Halak was also pulled after
giving up five goals in a 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh in Game 1 of the
second round. He went on to dominate the rest of the series.
CHICAGO (AP) - Potential expansion is the hot topic at this
week's Big Ten meetings in Chicago. The Big Ten is deciding whether
expand from its current 11 members to extend the reach of its
lucrative TV network and add a championship football game. Pitt has
been mentioned as a possible target to join the league.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pitt women's basketball coach Agnus Berenato
has rounded out his staff with the hiring of assistant Khadija
Head. Head comes to Pittsburgh from Middle Tennessee State, where
she served three years as an assistant.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The mother of Penguins general manager Ray
Shero has died at the age of 86. Mariette Shero was the widow of
former NHL coach Fred Shero. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports
the Quebec native lived in New Jersey before moving into an
assisted living community outside Pittsburgh recently.
