PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Raul Ibanez hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer and Chase Utley also went deep for the NL East-leading Phillies.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies' reserve catcher, Brian Schneider, will be in Allentown this weekend for a rehabilitation assignment with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Schneider has been on the disabled list since May 9th with a strained left Achilles tendon.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — George Kottaras, playing only because of an injury, doubled in a run and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied from a three-run deficit to end a nine-game losing streak, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Carlos Villanueva hit pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit in the back with a pitch with one out, only to get Delwyn Young to ground into a game-ending double play.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pirates placed left-hander Jack Taschner on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, a move that allowed them to activate Brendan Donnelly for last night's game against Milwaukee.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Plate umpire John Hirschbeck left the Brewers-Pirates game with concussion-like symptoms after being struck by an errant warmup pitch. Brewers catcher Gregg Zaun was slow to react to a pitch that sailed high, and it struck Hirschbeck in the mask before the Pirates batted in the first inning.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trevor Hoffman is ready to pitch again for the Brewers following an extensive bullpen throwing session aimed at straightening out the struggling closer's delivery. Even if his next appearance isn't in a save situation, the majors' career leader with 596 saves won't be unhappy. What he wants is to be able to pitch effectively again.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers were down to a three-man bench for their game in Pittsburgh after outfielder Jody Gerut left the team to be with his wife, who is expecting a baby. The Brewers are uncertain when Gerut will rejoin the team.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to terms with TNT analyst Doug Collins to become their new coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not been made public.
MONTREAL (AP) — Michael Cammalleri scored in the first period to end Montreal's two-game drought, leading the Canadiens to a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final. Tom Pyatt and Dominic Moore had a goal and assist apiece for Montreal.
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Construction has begun on a three-megawatt solar farm at Pocono Raceway in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Escondido, California-based energy company enXco says it will design and build the project and then turn it over to the raceway.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes says a flight attendant might have singled him out last month because he was a former Pittsburgh Steelers player. Holmes says he felt he was scrutinized just for who he is. A flight attendant claimed Holmes failed to follow regulations by not turning off his iPod as the plane was landing.
UNDATED (AP) — Lance Armstrong has denied allegations made by disgraced American cyclist Floyd Landis, who has admitted to systematic use of performance-enhancing drugs and also accused the seven-time Tour de France champion of doping. Armstrong says quote "it's our word against his word. I like our word."
SYDNEY (AP) — Second baseman Bradley Harman, who briefly played with Philadelphia Phillies, has been banned for 14 months by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority. ASADA says Harman violated anti-doping rules for failing to inform drug-testing officials of his location.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia's new soccer franchise says it has sold out its season-ticket allotment for its new stadium in Chester. The Union will play their first game at PPL Park on June 27th against Seattle. The team says it sold 12,000 season tickets for the 18,500 seat stadium. Single game seats go on sale June 7th.
