WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - For the first time in nearly a month, the
Chicago Blackhawks are trying to figure out how to bounce back from
a loss. The Philadelphia Flyers beat them 4-3 in Game 3 of the
Stanley Cup finals in overtime Wednesday, after being just one goal
away from a 3-0 series lead. Now they face the prospect of a tied
should they fall again tonight.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers are getting their
money's worth out of Danny Briere and Chris Pronger now that
they're in the Stanley Cup final. Briere, who signed the richest
free-agent deal in team history, leads the team with 11 goals this
post-season. Pronger, acquired for two first-round draft picks, has
embraced his role as series villain.

NEW YORK (AP) - Game 3 drew the largest TV audience for the
Stanley Cup finals on cable in eight years. The Flyers' 4-3
overtime victory over the Blackhawks on Versus on Wednesday night
earned a 3.1 rating and averaged 3.6 million viewers. It was the
highest-rated and most-watched telecast in network history.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Donnie
Veal will miss the rest of the season after having reconstructive
elbow surgery today. The team says he was diagnosed with a torn
ulnar collateral ligament. Veal, 25, was 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA in
nine starts at Triple-A Indianapolis.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers kicker Jeff Reed says the NFL ordered
him to undergo an evaluation after an alcohol-related dispute with
Pittsburgh police following a game in October. Reed's evaluation
apparently was similar to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's, who was
ordered to undergo it after a Georgia college student accused him
of sexually assaulting her.

CHICAGO (AP) - The NFL has agreed to have six of its Thursday
night games this season broadcast on local TV. The NFL Network
telecast of each game will be carried in the local markets of each
team where there is a Tribune-owned station, including in
Philadelphia, where the Eagles game against the Houston Oilers on
December 2nd will air on WPHL.
