GAME SUSPENDED IN THE THIRD INNING, WILL BE RESUMED TODAY
NEW YORK (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger has been cleared by the NFL to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers beginning next week. But no decision has been made on the length of his suspension over sexual assault allegations. Roethlisberger has undergone a behavioral evaluation as part of the suspension, which could be reduced to four games. The case will be reviewed before the regular season.
NEW YORK (AP) - It was another scoreless night for the Phillies. Last night's 3-0 loss to New York was the third shutout in a row for the Philadelphia. It's the first time since 1983 that the Phils have been blanked three days in a row. The Mets' three-game sweep of gives them five straight wins.
CINCINNATI (AP) - The Reds have their best record since 2006 after beating the Pirates 8-2 last night. Scott Rolen's three-run homer started an early splurge off Pirates righty Charlie Morton. Cincinnati batted around in each of the first two innings for seven runs off Morton, who's now 1-9 on the year.
CINCINNATI (AP) - Pirates third baseman Andy LaRoche was back in the lineup last night after missing five games with a sore back. LaRoche had a throwing error that prolonged the second inning of the 8-2 loss to Cincinnati.
CHICAGO (AP) - Flyers Chris Pronger and Marian Hossa can't stay away from the Stanley Cup finals. Pronger is back in the finals for the third time in five years with his third team, the
Philadelphia Flyers. Hossa's trek is even more rare. He'll be playing in his third straight championship with a different team. Game 1 is tomorrow in Chicago.
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) - Penn State coach Joe Paterno bowed out last night a few hours before a scheduled appearance at a university alumni event in Hershey because of a lingering flu bug. The 83-year-old Paterno has had an intestinal ailment that kept him from attending a similar reception in Pittsburgh two weeks ago as well as Big Ten meetings in Chicago last week.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ron Artest made a buzzer-beater to give the Los Angeles Lakers a 103-101 win over Phoenix and a 3-2 series lead in the NBA Western Conference finals. Artest had just four points on two-of-nine shooting, but his rebound of a Kobe Bryant air ball moved the defending NBA champion Lakers within one game of going to the NBA Finals for the third straight year.
BOSTON (AP) - The NBA rescinded one of the technical fouls against Boston center Kendrick Perkins, which means he will be eligible to play in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals Friday night against Orlando. The Celtics won the first three games of this series, but have dropped the last two.
NEW YORK (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger has been cleared by the NFL to return for three days of organized team activities by the Pittsburgh Steelers beginning next week, although no decision has been made on the length of his suspension. The QB was suspended without pay for six games last month by commissioner Roger Goodell after a 20-year-old college student
accused him of sexual assault in Georgia.
PARKER, Colo. (AP) - Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer and Robin Freeman shot a 6-under 66 and share the first-round lead at the 71st PGA Senior Championship at Colorado
Golf Club. Tom Lehman and Brad Bryant are two shots back.
