WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

DENVER (AP) - Chase Utley drove in six runs and hit a grand slam
to cap a nine-run seventh inning last night as the Phillies
overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies 12-11.
With Atlanta's loss to the Mets last night, Philadelphia has
narrowed the Braves' lead in the NL East to just two games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich injured
his left knee in the second quarter as Pittsburgh beat the
starter-less Panthers 19-3 last night. Leftwich is expected to
replace Ben Roethlisberger during his suspension at the beginning
of the season. Leftwich completed an 18-yard pass to rookie
Emmanuel Sanders before being knocked off his feet in the first
half.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick's first start in four years was
merely a cameo. Vick led the Eagles to a field goal in two series
and Kurt Coleman scored on two fumble returns, but the Jets beat
Philadelphia 21-17 in their preseason finale last night. Neither
team used its starters.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah freshman Brian Blechen intercepted a
pass on the first play of overtime, setting Joe Phillips for a
21-yard field goal that gave the Utes a 27-24 victory against
fifteenth-ranked Pittsburgh last night. Pittsburgh had rallied with
14 points in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime on Dan Hutchins'
30-yard field goal on the final play of regulation.

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Former Penn State quarterback Pat Devlin
threw three touchdowns and Delaware defeated West Chester 31-0 in
the season opener last night. Devlin completed 14 of 23 passes for
163 yards. Freshman Andrew Pierce ran for 119 yards and a touchdown
on 13 carries for the Blue Hens. The victory was Delaware's 17th
straight over the Division II Golden Rams.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State president Graham Spanier
likes the revised Big Ten football schedules that include a regular
high-profile game with Nebraska. The conference has announced new
divisional alignments and schedules for football made necessary by
the addition of the Cornhuskers as the 12th member starting next
season. Before coming to Penn State, Spanier was chancellor at
Nebraska.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple coach Al Golden says he wants his
team to become college football's next Utah or Boise State. After a
10 win season where the Owls went to a bowl game, Temple is a
favorite to win the Mid-American Conference. The Owls open the
season tonight against Villanova in the Mayor's Cup game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins forward Jordan Staal is expected to
miss the start of training camp as he recovers from an infection to
his right foot, which was severely injured during the NHL playoffs.
But Penguins general manager Ray Shero believes Staal will be ready
for the October 7th opener against Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Drexel coach Bruiser Flint says he's still
shocked two of his players were arrested this summer. Starting
point guard Jamie Harris and backup forward Kevin Phillip are
suspended and face robbery, theft and weapons charges. Flint and
the Dragons tried to put the disappointment behind them with an
overseas trip to Turkey. Flint returned Monday night and is hitting
the recruiting trail.
