PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies couldn't close out a sweep
against the Giants, losing 5-2 last night. Jonathan Sanchez allowed
just two hits in eight innings and Buster Posey lined a pair of RBI
doubles. San Francisco stopped its three-game losing streak and
ended the Phillies' four-game winning string.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The dog days of summer continue for the
Pirates, who lost 4-2 to the Marlins last night in Pittsburgh.
Florida's Alex Sanabia pitched 7-plus innings of four-hit ball and
Gaby Sanchez hit a three-run homer. Andrew McCutchen homered for
the third time in four games for Pittsburgh, which clinched its
18th consecutive non-winning season.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies slugger Ryan Howard will start a
rehab assignment today with the club's Class-A affiliate in
Lakewood, Florida. The All-Star first baseman has been sidelined
with a sprained left ankle since August 2nd. Barring any setbacks,
Howard will play at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday and could
rejoin Philadelphia on Monday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have added 16-year-old Mexican
right-hander Luis Heredia to their system, agreeing to purchase his
rights from the Veracruz Red Eagles of the Mexican Baseball League.
The 6-foot-6 Heredia was ranked by Baseball America as the top
pitching prospect internationally entering the year. His fastball
has been clocked in the mid-90s.
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger will play in tomorrow's exhibition game against
the New York Giants, but isn't saying whether he will start the
game. Roethlisberger has worked with the starting offense most of
this week at training camp, an indication he will open the game.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Eli Manning isn't the only Giants
quarterback who will miss New York's preseason game against the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Backup Jim Sorgi is out, too. Agent Matt Brei
says Sorgi had an MRI on Thursday and was diagnosed with a torn
capsule that will sideline him two to three weeks.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - It's time to play ball again at
the Little League World Series. The annual 10-day tournament to
decide one of the biggest prizes in youth sports begins today.
Teams from Georgia, Hawaii, New Jersey and Taiwan each have a
chance to win a second Little League crown for their hometowns.
