WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chase Utley is taking the opportunity to
bulk up and build his strength for September while he sits out with
a thumb injury. The second baseman tells The Philadelphia Inquirer
he's spending more time in the gym and is now able to lift a lot
more with both his legs and his upper body.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies have announced infielder Cody
Ransom has cleared waivers and been sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Ransom was optioned to make room for newly acquired first baseman
Mike Sweeney last week.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Newly-minted Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau
returned to a hero's welcome at Steelers training camp yesterday.
The 72-year-old defensive coordinator was enshrined in Canton over
the weekend. He calls the honor the highlight of his 52 years of
playing or coaching in the NFL.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid likes
how first-year starter Kevin Kolb learns from his mistakes at
quarterback. Kolb struggled in a night session Thursday, but Reid
was much more satisfied with his work on Monday. Meanwhile, wide
receiver DeSean Jackson and running backs LeSean McCoy and Eldra
Buckley left practice early because of heat-related problems.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - The Eagles have signed blocking tight end
Nate Lawrie and released tight end Martin Rucker. Lawrie has played
some in the NFL over several years with three separate teams.
Rucker has been nursing a hamstring strain during most of training
camp, but the Philadelphia Inquirer says he didn't distinguish
himself before the injury.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers forward Riley Cote has
retired and will stay with the organization as an assistant coach
for the team's AHL affiliate. Cote announced his decision Monday.
He played in 156 games for the Flyers and scored one goal with
seven points and 411 penalty minutes from 2006-2010. He'll assist
on the staff of the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Rutgers and Temple have agreed to a
four-game football series beginning in 2015 at Rutgers Stadium. The
schools say that the Scarlet Knights will be host Temple in 2015
and 2017, while the Owls will play host in Philadelphia in 2016 and
2018. Rutgers and Temple have met 35 times on the gridiron in a
series that began in 1948. The Scarlet Knights hold a 18-16
advantage.
