PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's Raul Ibanez sparked a
five-run third inning with a three-run homer as the Phillies
pounded out a dozen hits to support Roy Halladay in a 6-5 victory
over the Mets yesterday. Halladay struggled on an 88-degree
afternoon, allowing five runs on nine hits in seven innings.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Some injured Phillies are taking steps aimed
at rejoining their teammates. Center fielder Shane Victorino is
beginning a rehab assignment tomorrow at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Victorino is trying to return from a left abdominal strain.
Meanwhile, slugger Ryan Howard wants to be back with the team on
August 17th. He's off crutches but still limping from an ankle
sprain.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have to settle for a split of
their four-game weekend set with Coloradio after an 8-4 loss in
Denver yesterday. Jose Tabata, Neil Walker and Ronny Cedeno each
had two hits for the Pirates, who have lost 20 of 29.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have fired pitching coach Joe
Kerrigan and bench coach Gary Varsho, saying they are no longer
right for the staff. Kerrigan is a former Red Sox, Phillies and
Expos pitching coach. He was replaced by his assistant, former
major league pitcher Ray Searage. Varsho, a former Pirates and
Phillies outfielder, was replaced by minor league field coordinator
Jeff Banister.
FRISCO, Texas (AP) - Jeff Cunningham scored in the 75th and 81st
minute to lift FC Dallas to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union
last night. FC Dallas has extended its unbeaten streak to eight
games, while the Union falls to 4-10-3.
TORONTO (AP) - Normally when Sidney Crosby walks into a room,
he's the center of attention. But he had some company in Toronto
yesterday as the NHL superstar met tennis ace Roger Federer. They
were going to hit balls together on a practice court but rain
scuttled their plans. Instead, the two got a chance to talk before
holding a photo opportunity.
