WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Monday

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Pirates have been swept out of St. Louis
with a 9-1 loss to the Cardinals. Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer
and Adam Wainwright stayed unbeaten at home with seven strong
innings and the go-ahead RBI for the Cardinals. St. Louis outscored
Pittsburgh 21-2 in the three-game series.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Phillies salvaged the final game of their
weekend series with the Nationals 6-4 in 11 innings yesterday.
Placido Polanco and Jayson Werth each drove in a run in the 11th.
The Phillies lost the first two games of the series to the
last-place Nationals but managed to avoid what would have been
their first sweep against Washington.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan
Howard left yesterday's game against Washington with a sprained
left ankle. Howard was injured as he scrambled back to second base
after a throw from Nationals right fielder Michael Morse. An x-ray
on the ankle has turned up negative.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) - Greg Biffle has won an often-delayed
NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway to snap a 64-race winless streak and
take the checkered flag for injured owner Jack Roush. Biffle won on
Sunday with Roush in the Mayo Clinic for injuries sustained in a
plane crash in Wisconsin. Tony Stewart was second and Roush driver
Carl Edwards was third.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Steelers first-round draft pick Maurkice
Pouncey sat out the team's only practice yesterday with a hamstring
injury, as did rookie running back Jonathan Dwyer. Guard Ramon
Foster was held out with a concussion but could resume light
workouts as early as today. Neither Pouncey, nor Dwyer, is expected
to be sidelined long.

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Steelers kicker Jeff Reed isn't happy after
learning he won't be signed to the multiyear contract he expected
after being designated as the team's franchise player. The team
previously told Reed that they wanted to work out an extended
contract. But any chance of a deal apparently ended when lineman
Willie Colon was injured in June and Flozell Adams was signed to
replace him.
