WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez had two home runs
for the second consecutive game as the Pirates routed the Brewers
15-3 last night. The Bucs' prized rookie hit a two-run homer to
center in the fifth and a solo shot off the right-field pole in the
eighth. Delwyn Young had a home run and a career-high five RBIs to
help Pittsburgh win for the fourth time in five games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit left last night's
game after three innings due to feeling light-headed and nauseated.
Doumit missed Tuesday's game after taking a foul ball off his mask
during Monday's game.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The estranged wife of Pirates outfielder Jose
Tabata has pleaded guilty to faking a pregnancy and stealing a baby
to fool her husband into thinking he was the father. Amalia
Tabata-Pereira will be sentenced in September. A Pirates spokesman
says Tabata has long avoided contact with Tabata-Pereira and he
continues to work with his lawyers to complete their pending
divorce.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Phillies have now lost six of seven after
last night's 5-1 setback in St. Louis. Ryan Howard hit his 22nd
homer for the Phillies. The Cardinals have beaten the two-time
defending NL champs three straight games by a 20-6 total and will
go for the sweep this afternoon.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Phillies left-hander Jamie Moyer has returned
to Philadelphia to be examined by team medical personnel after an
elbow injury forced him out of a start Tuesday. Manager Charlie
Manuel believes Moyer is headed for the 15-day disabled list.
Moyer's injury leaves the Phillies with rotation openings Saturday
and Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia 76ers have signed free
agent center Tony Battie. 76ers president Ed Stafanski says that
the team sees Battie as providing additional depth in the front
court and "a valuable veteran presence" for younger players.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Navy and Penn State plan to renew
their football rivalry in 2012. The schools have announced they
will meet at Beaver Stadium on September 15th, 2012, in their first
game since 1974. Navy won that meeting when former Penn State
assistant coach George Welsh led the Midshipmen to a 7-6 upset over
the Number 8 Nittany Lions in State College.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Gabriel Obertan scored in the 76th minute
Wednesday night to give Premier League powerhouse Manchester United
a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union last night. A large
throng of the more than 44,000 at Lincoln Financial Field donned
red and white shirts to cheer on the English club.

BOYDS, Md. (AP) - D.C. United scored early in both halves in a
2-0 victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders last night in the
quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. Harrisburg City finished the
