PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The 76ers have signed Number 2 overall draft
pick Evan Turner. Turner averaged 20.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.9
assists while leading Ohio State into the round of 16 in the NCAA
tournament. He also won the AP's Player of the Year honors.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Billy King is the New Jersey Nets'
new general manager. The former Sixers GM was hired yesterday to
replace Rod Thorn as the Nets' top executive. Nets owner Mikhail
Prokhorov says his new chief executive will control both the job as
president and general manager.
CHICAGO (AP) - The Phillies open the season's second half on the
road in Chicago tonight. Jamie Moyer takes the mound against the
Cubs and Ryan Dempster. Joe Blanton is slated to start tomorrow's
contest, followed by Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates won't start their second half of
the season until tomorrow when they take on the Astros. Pittsburgh
is hoping to have a better run than they did in the first half of
their campaign. This year's lowlights include a 20-0 loss to the
Brewers, a 12 game losing streak and the firing of one of their
racing pierogi mascots for criticizing management.
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - The International League notched a 2-1 win
over the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star game at
Coca-Cola Park in Allentown last night. The two teams combined for
nine hits. The International League had only four hits, but three
came in a two-run rally in the sixth.
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - The Philadelphia Union got a first-half goal
from Sebastien Le Toux and it was all the offense they needed in a
1-0 win over Scottish club Celtic FC in an international friendly
in Chester, Pennsylvania. Backup goalkeepers Brad Knighton and
Brian Perk kept Celtic out of the Union net.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Visits from Maryland and St. Joseph's
highlight the home part of Penn State's 2010-11 nonconference men's
basketball schedule. The Terrapins visit Happy Valley December 1st
as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. St. Joe's comes to central
Pennsylvania on November 15th.
NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Roddick's wins in men's singles, doubles
and mixed doubles weren't enough as the New York Sportimes nipped
the Philadelphia Freedoms 20-19 last night in a World Team Tennis
match. John McEnroe headlined the Sportimes squad.
