WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Friday

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael
Vick says he had "nothing to do" with a shooting following his
birthday celebration in Virginia Beach last week. Vick says in a
statement provided to the AP that he "left the restaurant prior to
it occurring and did not witness what happened." He adds that he's
been "completely truthful" about the incident.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Daniel McCutchen became the second Pirates
rookie in as many days to win for the first time this season as the
Bucs beat the banged up Phillies 3-2 at PNC Park last night.
Rookies Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez drove in a run each as the
Pirates beat a team with a winning record for only the second time
in 33 games since May 25th.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Phillies star second baseman Chase Utley will
be out at least eight weeks after having surgery on his injured
right thumb. Utley isn't expected to return until September. The
operation was performed yesterday in New York. Trainers say Utley
must wear a splint on the thumb for five weeks before he even
begins rehabilitation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The injuries keep on coming for the Phillies.
Catcher Brian Schneider was removed from last night's game in
Pittsburgh with an apparent right hand injury. Trainers examined
Schneider's hand while the Pirates were batting during the second
inning. Schneider was lifted before he would have batted in the
fourth inning.

NEW YORK (AP) - Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was suspended
for last night's game for making contact with an umpire. Manuel was
ejected in the top of the 10th inning during Tuesday's 9-6 victory
over the Reds in Cincinnati. C.B. Bucknor motioned that Manuel
bumped his forehead with the brim of his cap while he complained.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Arjun Atwal ran off three straight
birdies early in his round at Aronimink Golf Club and wound up in a
four-way tie for the lead with a 4-under 66 on a gorgeous day in
the Philadelphia suburbs. Tiger Woods let a decent round get away
from him with an awful finish and shot 73 to finish toward the
bottom of the pack.

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - Tiger Woods says he has met with
federal authorities investigating a Canadian doctor accused of
distributing a human growth hormone. Woods says the meeting took
place last week in Orlando and lasted a couple of hours. He said he
cooperated with them and answered all their questions.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Flyers have signed
defenseman Braydon Coburn to a contract extension and acquired
defenseman Andrej Meszaros from Tampa Bay. The Flyers gave up a
second-round pick in the 2012 draft for Meszaros, who has 33 points
in two NHL seasons. Philadelphia also announced the signing of
defenseman Sean O'Donnell and forward Jody Shelley.
