OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Pirates have been swept out of
Oakland by the A's, losing yesterday 3-2. Kurt Suzuki homered with
two outs in the eighth inning after a dropped foul popup to power
Oakland to the win. Pittsburgh has lost six in a row and 17
straight on the road.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jamie Moyer pitched seven sharp innings as
the Phillies took advantage of Toronto's mistakes to beat the Blue
Jays 11-2 yesterday. Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Ben
Francisco each had three hits for the Phillies and Ryan Howard
scored three runs. Philadelphia has won eight of its past 11 games.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jamie Moyer is the new owner of a dubious
major league record. The 47-year-old Phillies starter gave up his
record-breaking 506th home run to move past Phillies Hall of Famer
Robin Roberts for the most homers allowed in a career. The
record-breaking shot was hit by Vernon Wells in the third inning.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco sat
out yesterday to rest his sore left elbow. Polanco aggravated the
elbow during a dive on Friday. He tells the Philadelphia Daily News
that he felt better yesterday than he did Saturday, which mean
he'll probably stay off the disabled list.
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Fred scored the go-ahead goal in the 79th
minute to help the Philadelphia Union open their new stadium in
Chester with a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders. More than 18,000
were on hand for the opening of $122 million PPL Park. Some in the
crowd arrived four hours before the game.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say they have recovered the body of a
man who disappeared while taking part in the swimming portion of a
triathlon in a Philadelphia river. The Philadelphia Inquirer
reports the body of the 40-year-old man from Prospect Park in
Delaware County was pulled from the Schuylkill (SKOO'-kul) River
yesterday.
