PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jamie Moyer tossed eight crisp innings as
the Phillies beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 last night. Moyer
limited the Tribe to just two hits while earning win Number 266.
Mitch Talbot allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings for
Cleveland.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jimmy Rollins returned to the Phillies last
night after missing several weeks with a strained calf. Rollins
went 0-for-4 in the leadoff spot. Also, the Phillies have put
catcher Carlos Ruiz on the disabled list with a concussion,
promoted lefty reliever Mike Zagurski from Triple-A Lehigh Valley
and cut reserve infielder-outfielder Greg Dobbs.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Rangers have extended their winning
streak to nine with a 6-3 interleague win over the Pirates last
night. The Pirates have now lost 12 straight road games. Pirates
starter Ross Ohlendorf is winless his past 15 starts. His last
victory came back in August over Milwaukee.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Pirates starter Zach Duke could be on
the 15-day disabled list if he is unable to make a scheduled side
session today. General manager Neal Huntington tells the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette that Duke skipped last night's scheduled start because
of muscle pain in his left elbow
NEW YORK (AP) - The Penguins will play their first game in the
CONSOL Energy Center on NHL opening night against defending Eastern
Conference champion Philadelphia. The Penguins had played at Mellon
Arena since joining the NHL in 1967. On New Year's Day, the
Penguins host the Winter Classic against Alex Ovechkin and the
Washington Capitals at Heinz Field - home of the Steelers.
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Street violence in Chester has prompted a
crackdown that could be in effect for Sunday's opening game at the
city's brand new PPL Park Major League Soccer stadium. A
Philadelphia Union spokeswoman says the recent events will have no
effect on the sold-out home-opener.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ohio State shooting guard Evan Turner
expects to become a Philadelphia 76er during the NBA draft
tomorrow. Turner tells the Philadelphia Inquirer he would
"definitely" be surprised if the Sixers didn't take him with the
Number 2 overall pick. Turner has refused to take part in predraft
workouts for teams other than Philadelphia.
