WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - After yesterday's storybook 1-0
victory over Algeria on Landon Donovan's goal in the first minute
of extra time, the U.S. soccer team turns its attention to its next
match against Ghana on Saturday in the round of 16. Ghana pushed
the U.S. out of the World Cup in 2006.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Florida's Fredi Gonzalez became the second
baseball manager fired this season as the Marlins dismissed him
after their 35-and-36 start that has Florida in fourth place in the
NL East. Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest
says the team "seems to be stuck in neutral," and the Marlins
have already contacted Bobby Valentine to gauge his interest.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are on a 10-game
winning streak, longest in the majors, after trouncing Pittsburgh
13-3 last night. Michael Young had three hits and drove in four
runs.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg (STRAHS'-burg) suffered his
first major league defeat yesterday, but it was hardly his fault.
Strasburg struck out nine but allowed nine singles in six innings
as Kansas City blanked the Washington Nationals 1-0 as Brian
Bannister and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - The longest tennis match in history -
10 hours and counting - resumes today at the All England Club with
John Isner (IHZ'-nur) of the U.S. and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut
(mah-HYOO') tied at 59-all in the decisive fifth set. Darkness
halted play yesterday with the score knotted at two sets apiece
after the pair had been playing for exactly 10 hours.
