VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia prosecutor says that
Michael Vick was involved in a confrontation before a shooting
following his birthday bash and the case isn't closed. He says the
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback left the confrontation "with the
help and encouragement of some of his friends and supporters" and
left the scene "in the 3 to 5 minute range" before the shooting.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Braves knocked off the Phillies 7-5 last
night. The loss puts Philadelphia six games behind Atlanta with its
seventh loss in 10 games. Martin Prado had a pair of solo homers
and Matt Diaz also connected for the Braves, who roughed up Jamie
Moyer.
HOUSTON (AP) - The Astros doubled-up the Pirates 6-3 last night
in Houston. Pirates starter Daniel McCutchen (1-4) allowed three of
Houston's four homers in five innings of work.
HOUSTON (AP) - The Pirates have picked up right-handed reliever
Sean Gallagher from San Diego on Wednesday in exchange for cash.
The Pirates will make a corresponding roster move when Gallagher
joins the team. Gallagher had a 5.40 ERA in 15 relief appearances
for the Padres before he was designated for assignment on July 1st.
He had a 2.77 ERA in his last eight relief appearances with San
Diego.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Penguins have signed defenseman Andrew
Hutchinson to a two-way contract that will pay him $500,000 if he
plays in the NHL next season. Hutchinson has 135 games of NHL
experience with Dallas, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Nashville, getting
12 goals and 26 assists.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Russian
news services are indicating the Flyers and Ukrainian free agent
forward Nikolai Zherdev have come to a deal. Zherdev played last
season in Russia. Boston, Toronto and Buffalo are other teams that
have reportedly offered him a contract.
OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) - There's something increasingly missing from
the U.S. Women's Open, Americans. An American victory in the
national championship is now a surprise. Cristie Kerr is the only
American to win in the last five years. Since 1995, there have been
nearly as many South Korean champions as U.S. winners. The Women's
Open tees off this morning at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh.
