NEW YORK (AP) - Amare Stoudemire (ah-MAR'-ay STOO'-duh-my-ur) is
heading to the New York Knicks, and both sides are hoping he's not
coming alone. The Knicks say they intend to sign Stoudemire to a
contract later this week that could be worth $100 million over five
years and the former Phoenix center says he's working on recruiting
fellow free agents LeBron James and Dwyane Wade to New York with
him.
UNDATED (AP) - If either LeBron James or Dwyane Wade knows where
they will be playing in the NBA next season, they weren't talking
yesterday. James was at a camp in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, was
Wade was meeting with the owner of the Miami Heat, which seemed
prepared to offer the free-agent guard some $127 million to stay in
south Florida the next six seasons.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - At just about the halfway point of the
baseball season, Roy Halladay is halfway to being a 20-game winner.
The Philadelphia fireballer tossed a five-hitter, needing just 93
pitches to hurl the Phillies to a 3-1 win over Atlanta last night.
CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago White Sox have won 19 of their last
24 to climb within one game of the American League Central lead
behind Detroit and Minnesota. Carlos Quentin hit two home runs and
Gavin Floyd pitched seven solid innings to lead the White Sox' 9-2
win over the Los Angeles Angels.
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Uruguay plays Netherlands today
in a World Cup semifinal (2:30 p.m. start Eastern time) with the
winner advancing to Sunday's championship. Tomorrow, Spain takes on
Germany in the other semifinal.
