WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Tuesday

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - The Phillies' Charlie Manuel will try to
do tonight what no National League manager has been able to do
since 1996 - win the All-Star Game. Manuel is leading the NL squad
for his second straight Midsummer Classic. The American League won
last year's matchup 4-3.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Charlie Manuel has tapped Colorado ace
Ubaldo Jimenez as his starter for tonight's All-Star Game in
Anaheim. Jimenez is 15-1 with a 2.20 ERA. He'll face Tampa Bay's
David Price, who gets the nod for the AL.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Phillies slugger Ryan Howard will be
hitting cleanup tonight as the designated hitter for the National
League. NL skipper Charlie Manuel says he's confident the
left-handed Howard will be able to hit left handed American league
pitching. Manuel notes that Howard has 119 at-bats against
left-handed pitchers and 65 RBIs this year.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Pirates reliever Evan Meek is soaking in
the experience of his first All-Star Game. Meek's parents and four
siblings are all on hand for the game. He jokes to MLB.com that
should he get an opportunity to take the mound tonight, he'll get
out whoever he has to face.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates are shuffling their minor league
rosters during the All-Star break. The Bucs have demoted pitching
prospect Tim Alderson from Double-A Altoona to Single-A Bradenton.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the team has also reacquired
shortstop Brian Bixler from the Cleveland organization and sent him
to Triple-A Indianapolis.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Penn State quarterbacks coach Jay
Paterno tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that his famous father is
feeling better and is enjoying a family vacation at the Jersey
Shore. Eighty-three-year-old Joe Paterno has been fighting
intestinal problems for nearly two months. The illness forced him
to cancel three speaking events with alumni throughout the state
this summer.
