PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Brewers nipped the Pirates 3-2 last night
in Pittsburgh. Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks both homered for the
second time in the series for the Brewers, who allowed a combined
26 runs in losing the previous two games. Milwaukee's Yovani
Gallardo came off the disabled list and pitched six shutout
innings.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have placed catcher Ryan Doumit on
the 15-day disabled list with a concussion and recalled Jason
Jaramillo from Triple-A Indianapolis. Doumit left Wednesday night's
game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth inning because he
felt lightheaded and nauseous.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Placido Polanco's leadoff homer in the 11th
inning gave the Phillies enough to knock off the Cardinals 2-0 to
salvage the final game of a four game set in St. Louis.
Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels was nearly perfect on the
afternoon, allowing one hit in eight innings. He opened the game
with five straight strikeouts.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Milt Thompson is out as the Phillies hitting
coach. The Phillies have struggled mightily at the plate this year.
They're batting just .254 as a team. That's tied for 4th worst in
the National League. Greg Gross, who's the hitting coach for
Triple-A Lehigh Valley, will move up to the big league squad.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer is headed for the
15-day disabled list with an elbow injury that forced him out of
his last start after only one inning. The 47-year-old left-hander
was hurt Tuesday and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says Moyer
will be out indefinitely, but the team hadn't determined whether he
needs reconstructive surgery.
UNDATED (AP) - While the Phillies may be searching for pitching
help, they won't be getting any from Pedro Martinez. The pitcher's
agent tells ESPNDeportes.com Martinez will sit out this season,
although he's not made a decision about retiring. Fern Cuza says
Martinez hasn't thrown at all this year.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Flyers have signed 25-year-old forward
Darroll Powe to a one-year contract. The 5'11, 210-pound Powe had
15 points and 54 penalty minutes for Philadelphia last season. He
also had one assist and six penalty minutes in 23 playoff games as
the Flyers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.
NEW YORK (AP) - Forbes has released its list of the world's most
valuable teams and English soccer club leads the way at $1.84
billion. Both of Pennsylvania's NFL teams made the list, with the
Eagles at number 11 and the Steelers ranked 21st.
