DENVER (AP) - Zach Duke threw six solid innings to help the
Pittsburgh Pirates snap a four-game skid last night with a 4-2 win
over a reeling Colorado Rockies team. The Rockies returned home
from a disastrous 2-9 road trip and dropped their seventh straight
contest.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Phillies are enjoying their longest
winning streak of the season after knocking off the Diamondbacks
9-5 for their sixth straight victory. Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and
Cody Ransom all homered for the Phillies. The win puts Philadelphia
3-and-a-half games back of NL East-leading Atlanta.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins sat out
last night's game because of bruised left foot. The three-time
All-Star got hurt when he fouled a ball of his foot during
Philadelphia's 5-4 win over Colorado on Monday. X-rays on the foot
were negative and Rollins is listed as day-to-day.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers might not know until late in
training camp whether quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's suspension
will be reduced from six to four games by NFL commissioner Roger
Goodell. Goodell plans to visit the Steelers' camp next week, but
the stop isn't specifically related to Roethlisberger's suspension.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have signed safety Nate Allen,
their second-round draft pick out of South Florida, to a four-year
contract. That leaves first-round pick Brandon Graham as the
Eagles' only unsigned draft pick. Allen is expected to report to
camp today.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and co-owner
Mario Lemieux skated onto the Consol Energy Arena simultaneously,
becoming the first skaters to try out the ice at the Pittsburgh
Penguins' new Consol Energy Center. Crosby and Lemieux each skated
for a few minutes at the still-to-be-opened arena yesterday before
welcoming youngsters onto the ice.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Some Penguins and Capitals players were on
hand at the Steelers' Heinz Field yesterday to promote the New
Year's Day Winter Classic. The outdoor NHL game pits Pittsburgh
against Washington in what commissioner Gary Bettman says is
probably the league's best rivalry. The Pens' Sidney Crosby and the
Capitals' Mike Knuble joined some teammates shooting pucks between
the goal posts.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Longtime Penguins public address announcer
John Barbero will be honored at the Penguins new home with a
display at the arena opening next month. Barbero worked Penguins
games for more than 35 years. He died Monday of a brain tumor.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The name of the Philadelphia arena that's
home to the Flyers and 76ers has been changed from the Wachovia
Center to the Wells Fargo Center. Wells Fargo bought Wachovia in
December 2008.
