MIAMI (AP) - The Phillies routed the Marlins 7-2 last night with
the help of three RBIs from rookie Domonic Brown. Kyle Kendrick
pitched six effective innings and Raul Ibanez added two RBIs as the
Phillies won for the 11th time in 13 games.
SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners have traded veteran first
baseman and designated hitter Mike Sweeney to the Philadelphia
Phillies for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Seattle first activated Sweeney from the disabled list then dealt
the clubhouse leader.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds knocked off the Pirates
9-4 yesterday in a matinee game in Pittsburgh. Johnny Cueto
dominated the Pirates again over six innings, while Paul Janish
homered and drove in four runs for Cincinnati. Jeff Karstens takes
the loss for Pittsburgh.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Center fielder Andrew McCutchen was back in
the Pittsburgh lineup, a day after being struck in the neck by a
90-mph fastball thrown by the Reds' Mike Leake. McCutchen has a
bruised neck, but X-rays were negative. He didn't sustain a
concussion while being hit by Leake's pitch during the Pirates' 7-6
victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday night.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates have claimed right-handed reliever
Chris Resop off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. He pitched in one
game for Atlanta this season, giving up five runs in two innings
before going on the disabled list June 16th with a strained rib
cage muscle. He's 3-3 with a 6.14 ERA in 58 career games with the
Marlins, Angels and Braves.
WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is doing more than he was
asked to do by the league when given a six-game suspension after
being accused of sexual assault. Goodell says he'll meet with
Roethlisberger before the regular season starts in September and
determine whether to reduce the punishment to four games.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie
says Michael Vick's mistake in judgment shouldn't be confused with
any wrongdoing. Speaking to reporters yesterday for the first time
since that incident, Lurie says Vick shouldn't have attended his
birthday party in Virginia Beach where a man was shot. But he adds
that Vick is a "great teammate" and praises his community
service.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - University of Pittsburgh defensive end Jabaal
Sheard has been reinstated to the team after pleading guilty to
disorderly conduct for a fight last month in which he threw a man
through an art gallery's glass door. Coach Dave Wannstedt says
Sheard also will be disciplined by the team. Pitt opens preseason
camp Saturday.
