WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Wednesday

CHICAGO (AP) - Pittsburgh's Neil Walker and Garrett Jones each
hit a long two-run homer as the Pirates beat the Cubs 14-7 last
night for a rare road victory. Walker went 4 for 5 with four RBIs
and three runs scored for the Pirates, who won for only the fifth
time in 43 road games and ended a 14-game losing streak away from
PNC Park.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Brian Schneider and Ryan Howard each hit a
three-run homer to power the Phillies past the Dodgers 8-4 last
night, keeping them three games behind first-place Atlanta in the
NL East. The Phillies' lead over San Francisco in the wild-card
race remains 1 1/2 games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Michael Vick will start Philadelphia's final
preseason game because the Eagles are resting their starters. Coach
Andy Reid says Vick will play the first half against the New York
Jets on Thursday night. Rookie Mike Kafka is slated to play the
second half. Kevin Kolb will be on the sideline.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Eagles have claimed defensive end Pannel
Egboh off waivers from Houston and placed rookie defensive Ricky
Sapp on injured reserve. Egboh spent the final four weeks of last
season on Houston's practice squad. Sapp was a fifth-round pick
this year and has been bothered by a knee injury.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers linebacker Andre Frazier has been
waived from the injured reserve list as the team reached the 75-man
roster limit. Rookie offensive guard Chris Scott has been placed on
the physically unable to perform list. The team has released guard
Adrian Jones, cornerback David Pittman, linebacker Brandon Renkart
and fullback Dwayne Wright.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Coach Joe Paterno says he's still not
ready to announce who will be name Penn State's starting
quarterback. Sophomores Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin, and
freshman Robert Bolden are listed atop the depth chart for the
19th-ranked Nittany Lions for the season opener Saturday against
Youngstown State. Paterno says he hopes to name a starter in the
next day or so.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mark Ingram of Alabama won the Heisman Trophy
a year ago, but he's not the leading returning rusher in the
nation. With nearly 1,800 yards last year, Dion Lewis of Pitt is.
Lewis begins his second college season tomorrow at Utah, with three
new offensive linemen blocking for him and a new quarterback
handing him the ball in Tino Sunseri.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Redshirt sophomore forward Chris Clarke and
sophomore forward Carmel Bouchman have decided to leave the Temple
men's basketball program. Clarke has decided to transfer to
Division II Morehouse College in Atlanta. Bouchman played a total
12 minutes last season in nine games and scored two points. He'll
remain in his native Israel.
