WPPA / T-102 SPORTS / Thursday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh
have their first win together with Miami, and the Big Three got
help from some big 3s in the Heat's 97-87 victory over the 76ers
last night. James and the Heat just couldn't squash the Sixers, who
went on a 15-3 run late in the fourth to make it surprisingly
competitive. Evan Turner led the Sixers with 16 points in his first
NBA game.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Martin St. Louis scored the tiebreaking goal
early in the third and added a late empty-netter to help the Tampa
Bay Lightning beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 last night.
Pittsburgh got goals from Craig Adams, Matt Cooke and Pascal
Dupuis. The Penguins have lost two in a row.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco will
have surgery on his left elbow Friday and is expected to be ready
for spring training. Polanco will have bone fragments removed from
his elbow, in addition to having his extensor tendon repaired. He
is expected to need eight to 10 weeks of recovery.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - After four years with the Phillies, reliever
J.C. Romero is set to become a free agent after the team declined
its $4.5 million club option on the left-hander. He will get a
$250,000 buyout. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Junior says Romero had
"some struggles" this season, but adds that the team isn't ruling
out bringing him back at a lower salary.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State backup quarterback Matt
McGloin could move up the depth chart this weekend if starter Rob
Bolden isn't cleared to play for Michigan. The freshman Bolden got
knocked out of last week's Minnesota game with a possible head
injury. McGloin and Kevin Newsome have been splitting first-team
reps in practice, but McGloin was off the bench first last Saturday
after Bolden left.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh junior forward Nasir Robinson had
surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee and is expected
to be sidelined up to six weeks. The 6-foot-5 Robinson started all
34 games last season, averaging 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds as Pitt
reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.
