NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Alex Goligoski and Mark Letestu scored goals
within a three-minute span covering the first and second periods to
lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-1 victory over the undermanned
New Jersey Devils yesterday. The Devils played the game with a
franchise-low 15 healthy skaters due to injuries to Anton
Volchenkov and Brian Rolston.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jeff Carter scored his second goal of the
game with 2:38 left in the third period to lift the Philadelphia
Flyers to a 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night. Carter
snapped a tie when his shot bounced through the legs of goalie
Craig Anderson. Darroll Powe added an empty-netter only moments
later on the night the Flyers raised their Eastern Conference
champions banner.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With San Francisco closing out Atlanta 3-2
last night in the National League division series, the Phillies' NL
Championship Series matchup is all set. The Giants will be in
Philadelphia for Game 1 Saturday night.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons
has interviewed for the Pittsburgh Pirates' managerial job. Gibbons
is the Kansas City Royals' bench coach. He follows former Indians
manager Eric Wedge and former Arizona and Florida coach Bo Porter
in interviewing.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Eagles coach Andy Reid says defensive tackle
Brodrick Bunkley needs elbow surgery and will likely miss the rest
of the season. Bunkley was injured in Philadelphia's 27-24 win at
San Francisco on Sunday night. Reid revealed the extent of
Bunkley's injury on his radio show last night on WIP-AM.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith says
starting receiver Michael Jenkins has been medically cleared to
play Sunday in Philadelphia. Jenkins returned to practice three
weeks ago but missed all of preseason and the first five games
after injury his shoulder in an August 6th team scrimmage.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State forward Sasa Borovnjak will
miss this season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in
his right knee. The team says the injury occurred without any
contact during a team workout last week. Preseason practice
officially begins Friday.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Defender Steve Cherundolo is returning to
his club in Germany and won't play in the U.S. game against
Colombia tonight in Chester. Cherundolo was allowed yesterday to go
back to Hannover, which is currently third in the Bundesliga and
travels to Bayern Munich this weekend.
