SAN DIEGO (AP) - Cole Hamels held punchless San Diego to four
hits in eight innings and the Phillies won 2-0 last night for their
major league-leading fifth shutout. Hamels got all the support he
needed when Ryan Howard hit a two-run triple in the third.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to fill a
hole in their lineup with a player hoping to revive his career.
Pittsburgh's game against the Washington Nationals last night was
postponed due to rain, but the Pirates claimed infielder Brandon
Wood off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tyler Ennis scored off a rebound 5:31 into
overtime last night to give the Buffalo Sabres a 4-3 victory over
the Philadelphia Flyers and a 3-2 lead in the first-round series.
Game 6 is Sunday in Buffalo.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia right winger Jeff Carter missed
Game 5 of the Flyers' playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres
last night because of a knee injury. Carter left Game 4 after
hurting his right knee following a collision in front of the
Buffalo net with 2:20 left in the first period.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat needed a day
of rest before they rev up again to try and sweep the Philadelphia
76ers. The Heat didn't have a complete day off yesterday. They shot
free throws during a light workout but otherwise skipped a
strenuous practice a day after they beat the Sixers in Game 3.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Teams looking for a quarterback could have
the Philadelphia Eagles on speed dial before the NFL draft. The
inability to trade Kevin Kolb because of the lockout doesn't mean
the Eagles aren't an attractive partner for a club that needs a
quarterback. Philadelphia holds the No. 23 pick in the first round
of the draft.
